Distancing
A Poem
I stepped outside After days of social isolation
After social and let’s face it personal Distancing
After hours and hours and hours Of The Simpsons, of Netflix, of Facebook Scrolling
For updates that signal hope, for news That might be good, for relief, for release, for peace
I step outside and it is just as odd out here as it is in There, there as in my home, there as in my body
It is quiet, it is silent, it is in between rain, snow, and sun The sidewalks around my apartment complex
Are a picture of the day, Spring Equinox in a pandemic Dead worms, blue salt, empty
I can only walk this same walk so many times It does feel nice, the wind, the sun, the cold
My own little sacred labyrinth Surrounded by homes of people
Who are as in between as I am Who are not singing from balconies yet and if we did
It would be a mixture of English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi and more, it would be voices old and young it would be
Neighbors, strangers, humans In the midst of all of this spring and life, in the
Middle of all of this hope and fear, in the Curve and flattening of the curve of this
Now normal new normal potentially Up and down normal where we do not know
What each new day will bring, but we have to Spring up, step out, and balance
Isolation is protection for now, but we are all In this together —
connection is what Must manifest.
