Fear — The Burden We Choose to Carry
Our Power of Choice
Life is scary at times and death — well, who knows? And that “who knows” idea makes it even scarier, especially when it is all consuming — consuming all that we know, consuming us. Pretty scary. Halloween scary!
It is little wonder that this world is drenched in fear. Nature is seeped in it with the fear of death driving even the lowliest of creatures, even bugs. Darwin’s Law is based on it. Survival of the Fittest is powered by the Fear of Death — not by love but by the fear of death. Thus, it is little wonder that our world is full of fear and that the fear of death is the root of all fear.
So why not join this natural fearful predisposition inherent to our evolution?
The problem is that fear eats away at the soul and does so mercilessly, draining it of energy while distorting love into self-preservation. This is especially true of the King of Fears — the Fear of Death.
Life is a miracle and two of the most miraculous attributes of living are our abilities to love and to choose. Love and Freedom are the most prized jewels in Life’s Crown but the gold that forms the crown is Faith.
Faith dispels fear allowing Love and Freedom to shine and dominate one’s life.
Why? Because true Faith, not the ”what’s in it for me if I do what you say” kind, is selfless. It is a belief in power and spirit greater than oneself. Faith is also a wise choice because it is an acknowledgment of our limitations — mental, physical, and otherwise. Let’s face it, we know so little of all there is to know while existing for what amounts to a geological nanosecond in our tiny reference frame — Earth, which is a speck in the universe smaller than a drop of dew in the ocean of all there is to know.
So, Faith covers your bases AND it keeps that King of Fears in the dugout. Who needs Fear when you have Faith — a far greater power that opens the door to all that is unknown without concern for oneself? It is very freeing and worth the choice.
Rather than viewing the unknown with fear, we have the power to view the unknown with confidence dispelling the King of Fears as just a door to a new adventure — another place to explore. Thus, death becomes a portal, not an end, and since when do we need to fear a door even if we have not seen the room on the other side? That would make every hotel stay a terrifying nightmare. Instead, we open the door, turn on the light and see what’s there. Death is no different if we chose to see it that way — chose to see it without fear. And once we no longer fear death, most if not all fears dissipate in time and we find ourselves truly free and more capable of love for a big burden is lifted.
Imagine what a different world it would be if fear had little power in it and if death was simply viewed as a door through which you cannot fit all those empowering titles and material crap we accumulate in a lifetime because the door only fits our soul. But we are products of Nature and Natural Selection, so it is hard to go against our genetic grain of fear.
But here lies a possible answer to the riddle of life — you know, the “Why are we here?” riddle.
What if we are here as souls in form (as the major religions agree) to learn to love unconditionally and to learn to overcome fear, our own fear? After all, we entered this world and this life innocent of fear, so why not leave that way as well? And many do and to these brave wise loving souls, I dedicate this Halloween post.
A Final Thought: Fear is our creation. Although nature runs on it, each creature individually must succumb to it. Since Natural Selection and evolution need fear to be effective, it is instinctually programmed in all species. But we have a choice and this choice separates us from other species.
The freedom to choose love and fearless faith is in our power. It is what makes us higher forms. Let’s use it and make this world better for all, including Mother Nature and her countless fearful offspring. They depend on us to make the right choices for willing or not we have evolved into Mother Nature’s Stewards. Happy Halloween (a sinister laugh follows).

“What a tour de force! This story connects with me on many levels, as it is so much more than a simple murder mystery. It explores family ties, friendships, and the consequences of our choices, along with the resonance of ancient myths. It even asks readers to examine their own core beliefs. Plus, well-loved Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales provide the backbone for the story, a clever and effective conceit. And I am delighted that the story begins and ends with Addie and her grandmother reading together.” — Author Susan Robinson
“With Adeline’s Garden, we start with a mystery (murder? Suicide? Accident?) and again see the delightfully eclectic investigative team seen in Mr. Stockar’s previous novels. This time the story moves fast, with short, eventful chapters. You are taken in a dozen different, seemingly logical directions. You’re ready to say, “yes, this is what happened”, and then it veers in an entirely new track. It’s a fun ride.” — Author Doug Poole
