Discussion: How Should You Use Topic Tags for Fiction Stories on Medium?
Ask questions and talk about ideas and strategies here
When you publish a story on Medium, you can choose up to five topics for it.
This is for discoverability: based on the topics you select, your story is added to topic pages, and may be recommended to people who follow those topics.
Deciding on those five topics can be tricky for any story, but it can be especially challenging with fiction on Medium.
For example, if you tag your story with Romance, your story might be lost among memoirs, poems, media reviews, and dating advice.
On the other hand, if you tag it with Romance Fiction, you’ll be opting for a topic that likely has fewer followers, potentially limiting your story’s reach.
Of course, you can do both!
After all, you have five to choose from.
Still, you only have five, and ideally, you want to go with the best strategy.
- Should you opt for more popular topics to connect with the largest number of possible readers?
- Or should you go with more specific topics to connect with a smaller group of readers that are more likely to be interested?
- Is there something you wish Medium would improve about the topics system?
- Do you have favorite topics for publishing your fiction?
- What about creating new topics for fiction?
