Dimple, A Beauty Parameter?

No matter it is an anomaly of genes, still adds to beauty

In many societies Dimple on face is considered a sign of beauty. Men get attracted to a lady with dimples on either or both sides of face. But it is a matter of serious concern to ponder head to know whether it really is a sign of beauty? Or it is just a deformity or aberration.

In addition to beauty, dimples are also taken as a sign of heroism and innocence.

They are taken as a symbol of being lucky.

Dimples are more common in females than males. These can be permanent or transient, lateral being more common. In some people especially in small children dimple formation results due to excessive fats in cheeks. Such dimples get disappear as the person looses fats.

It is often seen that dimples disappear after adulthood or they may last forever. These can pass to successive generation or may be present in a child and cannot appear in other generations.

Several proverbs are also associated with the charm of dimple…. A dimple in your cheek-Many hearts can you seek.

Dimples are actually indentations which form as a result of genetic defect which results in shortening of facial muscles namely Zygomaticus muscles. This anomaly of Zygomaticus muscle causes dent in cheeks while smiling. Such dents are called dimples.

These faulty subcutaneous tissues develop during embryonic development i.e. before child birth and are called bifid or double Zygomaticus major resultantly.

This inherited trait is controlled by a dominant gene which means that only one copy of altered gene in a cell is sufficient to cause dimples.

Because of little scientific research on dimples we don’t exactly know the genes involved in dimple formation.

Do we need to revise our social liking for dimples or not? Because of absence of any apparent or hidden worries associated with this genetic anomaly, we take this phenotyypic beauty for granted and welcome it with open hearts.
