Summary

The article "Dimes & Dollars–The Trivial Connection Between Human Resources And Human Relations" contrasts the intrinsic value and humility of 'dimes' (representing hardworking individuals) with the superficial value and arrogance of 'dollars' (symbolizing the nouveau riche), emphasizing the importance of inherent good values and unity over wealth and status.

Abstract

The article draws a metaphorical comparison between the monetary value of coins and banknotes to the moral and social standing of individuals in society. It suggests that 'dimes', although smaller in value, are the backbone of currency, much like how hardworking, humble individuals form the foundation of a strong community. These individuals are celebrated for their resilience, unity, and the inherent good values they embody. In contrast, 'dollars' are portrayed as representing those who have quickly ascended to wealth and status, often displaying arrogance and a lack of emotional bonds. The narrative posits that while such individuals may enjoy a temporary high, their lives lack the substance and 'weight of goodness' that true legends possess. The article ultimately questions the reader's choice in life: to be like the dime, which brings joy and stability, or the dollar, which may have more immediate value but lacks depth and the ability to withstand the test of time.

Opinions

  • 'Dimes' are undervalued despite their foundational importance, much like how society often overlooks the contributions of the less affluent.
  • The strength of 'dimes' lies in their solidarity and the collective weight they carry, symbolizing the power of unity and shared values.
  • 'Dollars' are criticized for their lack of substance, as they cannot be added to a piggy bank without being folded and crumpled, representing the fragility of wealth without good values.
  • The article opines that the new rich, symbolized by 'dollars', are prone to falling from grace due to their lack of emotional depth and the absence of bonds that hold one up in life.
  • It is suggested that true legends are built on guts and glory, rising from humble beginnings and maintaining a connection to their roots, which 'dimes' represent.
  • The choice presented to the reader is between being a 'dime', which contributes to society and leaves a lasting legacy, or a 'dollar', which may offer temporary prestige but ultimately lacks a meaningful story.

Dimes are always undervalued and Dollars held highWhy? Don’t the dimes make up a dollar note? Why do they forget that it’s the dimes that accumulate and grow?

“They are made of guts and can’t be torn apart or burnt.”

Dimes are solid in nature and will always jingle, if not today–then tomorrow slowly, as they are built on a firm foundation and will always remain, just like inherent good values.

Remember the times when you would collect them for your piggy bank or to make a coin collection box. Wouldn’t you be happy to just keep on adding them to your piggy bank till it got full?

Didn’t the dimes take each other’s weight and hold on strong with a beautiful bond of unity in that closed environment?

And now for the dollars, can you collect them in a piggy bank as it is, straight away?

No. You need to fold it into small pieces, crumpling it, to add and push into a piggy bank, forcefully at every stage.

So that’s about the new rich, how they fly high for a bit but then come falling down because they do not carry the weight of goodness in them.

They are free of any emotion, concern, care or love (these are the bonds that hold you up and high in life–the ones present in dimes), rather they will fall down and drown, get burnt and fall apart in shackles, leaving behind no trace because the weight they carry is only of arrogance, ego, and high headedness.

They will have no memory of goodness to remember either, thus they can’t be the legends and nor can they have a story.

Their weightless lives will end someday with an unfolding misery, making them unable to figure out their untold story.

“No Guts–No Glory, No Legends–No Story!”

So who do you wish to be like?

A Dime–which can be in every pocket bringing a smile to even to the smallest or weakest of all, and shall forever jingle, marking its presence. They are the base for building a robust foundation, as all those who rise from the roots stay grounded for life.

Or

A Dollara weightless and silent one which has 10 times the value, no doubt only till it’s not torn, stained, or crumpled. It’s good to flaunt but when it comes to giving to a performer on the street what do you end up giving–a few dimes or a few dollars?

Do you know that all legends have stories because they had the guts to rise from nothing and find glory?
