Summary

The web content discusses the importance of showing appreciation to writers through engagement, akin to tipping service workers in the United States.

Abstract

The article "Did You Forget To Tip Your Writer Today?" draws a parallel between the American custom of tipping service industry professionals and the act of engaging with writers' content as a form of appreciation. It explains that while tipping is not legally mandated, it is a cultural norm that significantly contributes to service workers' income. The piece suggests that readers can "tip" writers by engaging with their work through reading, highlighting, clapping, commenting, and following, with each action signifying different levels of appreciation for the story shared. The author emphasizes that just as one would not leave a restaurant without tipping for good service, a reader should not consume content without expressing gratitude for the writer's effort.

Opinions

  • The author believes that tipping is an essential part of compensating service workers in the United States, despite it not being legally required.
  • A tip between 15 to 25 percent is seen as a standard way to show appreciation for good service, with anything more indicating exceptional service.
  • The author suggests that failing to leave a tip, or leaving a very small one, is a clear indication of dissatisfaction with the service provided.
  • The article posits that engagement with written content is the equivalent of tipping for writers, with different levels of interaction reflecting the reader's appreciation.
  • The author implies that readers have a responsibility to engage with content as a form of acknowledgment and support for the writer's work, just as diners have a social obligation to tip their servers.

A story that needs to be shared…

Let me explain a little bit about the tradition of tipping.

In the United States, tipping is not required by law, but it’s strongly encouraged. Under American federal law, the minimum wage for employees who earn a tip is a little over $2 an hour.

The majority of a server’s wage comes from tips.

Generally, (depending on the service and where you live in the United States) a tip between 15 to 25 percent of the bill before taxes is a way to show the person that you appreciated their service.

Anything more than that is to show the person that you really enjoyed their service.

Who Are You Expected To Tip?

  • waiters
  • taxi drivers
  • hairdressers
  • manicurists
  • bellhops
  • house cleaners
  • delivery drivers
  • hotel maids
  • housekeepers
  • valet

What Do You Do If The Service Is Terrible?

While there is no hard rule, leaving less than 15 percent clearly indicates that you were disappointed with the service.

The service would have to be terrible to leave no tip at all.

What Does This Have To Do With Us As Readers?

This made me think, if we show our appreciation to waiters, delivery drivers, hotel maids, etc., by tipping, how can we show appreciation to writers?

With our engagement.

Just like a person wouldn’t leave a restaurant without tipping, so too, a person wouldn’t read an article without expressing their appreciation by engaging with the writer.

How Much Am I Expected To Tip(Engage)?

I made a little table to illustrate how we can show the writer our appreciation for their work.

  • An okay story — reading and highlighting.
  • A good story — reading, highlighting, and clapping.
  • A great story — by reading, highlighting, commenting, and clapping.
  • An excellent story — is shown by reading, highlighting, commenting, clapping, and following.

So what do you think? Did you forget to tip your writer today?
