Summary

The author humorously suggests a personal correlation between their prolonged college education and economic downturns in the United States.

Abstract

The author sets the stage by juxtaposing their attempts to complete college with significant economic events, such as the 2006 housing bubble collapse and subsequent economic instability. Despite acknowledging a lack of understanding of economic mechanics, they propose a tongue-in-cheek theory that their educational endeavors, which included multiple interruptions and a final return to school in 2015-2016, coincide with economic turmoil. The author playfully entertains the idea that there might be a bizarre connection between their academic pursuits and the state of the economy, while also admitting the absurdity of this notion.

Opinions

  • The author believes there is a humorous and nonsensical correlation between their college education timeline and economic instability in the United States.
  • They recognize the implausibility of their education directly affecting the national economy, alluding to it as an "otherworldly correlation."
  • The author's tone suggests skepticism about their own hypothesis, contrasting it with the more rational perspective provided by their education.
  • There is a hint of self-deprecation as the author compares their understanding of economics to the sensationalist "It was aliens" narratives found on television.

Did I Break the Economy?

Let me set the scene for you. In 2006, I should have graduated from college and been attempting to enter the workforce. At the same time, the United States was experiencing economic instability as the housing bubble collapse (and other technical issues that I know nothing about) were about to take effect.

Now I know what you’re thinking:

“How can you have caused the economy to collapse if you don’t even know how the economy works?!”

That’s fair. But hear me out. After resolving some of the issues that kept me from graduating from college in 2006, I returned to school. When did I return to school? 2007 and 2008.

More personal issues forced another break in the educational path. I gave it another shot when I was in a better position to tackle school. At this point we were nearing the 2015–2016 school year. I’ve been in school since then, and will be graduating next month.

Now do you see? There’s certainly some vague, weird, otherworldly correlation between my college education and the United States economy. My education tells me this is nonsense, but I also grew up watching the “It was aliens” guy on the History Channel. So… did I break the economy?
