Dhulandi or the ‘Festival of Colors’ and Its Spiritual Significance

A short story

Like all Indian festivals, Holi has a deeper spiritual meaning than mere rituals and customs.

Dhulandi, also known as Dhuleti (coloring each other), is celebrated the day after Holika Dehan.

The first day of Holi reminds us that the divine always protects the one who follows the path of righteousness. People celebrate the victory of good over evil the following day by playing with colors and eating sweets.

The Love Story of Radha and Krishna —

Here is the legend of Radha and Krishna. Their eternal love makes this festival more colorful and beautiful.

According to legend, there lived a witch named Pootna. When Krishna was a few months old, his evil uncle Kansa sent her to kill Krishna. So, Pootna breastfed Krishna with her poisoned milk. Krishna survived the incident; however, due to the poisoned milk, his skin color turned blue forever.

When Lord Krishna gained youth, he fell in love with a beautiful woman named Radha. She had fair skin, and she would often tease Krishna for his dark skin tone.

One day, Lord Krishna got extremely envious of Radha’s fair complexion. He complained to his mother Yashoda at night that he was mad at nature and said, “It is not just. Nature has given fair skin to Radha but made me blue.”

To cheer her son up, the mother asked Krishna to color Radha’s face with the color of his choice. She told Krishna that this way, they wouldn’t look different at all.

In the morning, when Lord Krishna met Radha, he applied his favorite color to her face. He then said to her, “This is the color of my love, and now we both look the same.”

Since then, the application of colors has become an expression of love.

The spiritual significance of colors:

Holi means the festival of colors. Colors bring joy and happiness to one’s life. It also helps one to open oneself to others, and celebrating with colors connects people. All colored faces look alike, which signifies that this is how the divine intended us to be. The second day of Holi is about becoming one and forgetting our differences.

The colors of Holi represent purity, peace, and love.

Splashing each other with colors means that we should keep spreading love and compassion everywhere to enhance togetherness.

It also signifies the connection of the soul with the Supreme.
