As a long-time university English professor and university communications officer, I have been helping writers learn to write and to polish their writing for more than 30 years. This pivot is a natural extension of my teaching of writing and literature.
For the past year, I have taken a certificate course in developmental editing at ClubEdFreelancers.com. This full-scale program is produced and taught by a veteran editor with more than 20 years of experience in the field. I’m fortunate that my experience complements the training I have received in developmental editing and freelance editing.

I believe in stories. And I believe in your ability to tell your story in your own way. Where I come in is to help you craft the best story you can so that it appeals to readers and your intended audience. I support your own story-telling efforts, not take them over. While I will guide you through the process, it’s up to you to decide whether to accept my suggestions or not. Together, we can make a formidable team in helping your produce your best book.
Fiction:
I offer developmental editing of book length works of literary fiction, memoir, short stories, and poetry collections. Developmental editing looks at the bigger-picture item of storytelling: plot and character arcs, setting and world-building. I help writers
Non-Fiction:
I also offer developmental editing of book-length works of general nonfiction and academic writing. In addition, I work with smaller projects, from single fact sheets, grants, and academic papers to large-scale website redesign. For smaller projects, I offer copy editing and proofreading. I’m familiar with most major style guides as well, including Chicago, MLA, APA, AMA, and more.
Writing Coaching
I also offer writing coaching on a per-project or per-hourly basis. Most writing challenges stem from the challenges of the writing process itself. As a writing process expert, I can guide you through those thorny composition problems to reach solutions that will speak to your readers and audience. Writing coaching is available for any project and genre.
Writing: Ghostwriting, Book Doctoring, and Coauthoring
I’m not only an editor. I’m also a writer. If you are swamped for time, you may wish to hire me to ghostwrite your book.
Or perhaps you have a draft of a book that needs some work. I can step in as a book doctor and revise your draft to pull it into shape following best practices.
Finally, I am available to work with you in both a coaching and non-coaching capacity as a partner and co-author with you.
