Desperate Driving: How To Drive a Three-Pedal Car Using Two Feet

This reminds me of a hilarious story which I thank my friend Dejan

for re-activating it in my memory.

It happened many many years ago.

I was attending my first driving lessons and as usual, our driving instructor told us lots of stories while we were driving, of course not in the moments we were in overcrowded areas.

He told us that he had a new driving school student, a middle-aged woman, a total novice to driving. As usual, he drove the car to a big parking lot and explained the basics of starting the car, the pedals, the wheel, and many more.

So he explained to her…

here are the three pedals, the clutch, the brake, and the gas

She was a bit emotional, it was her first day, she had never driven a car and no one had shown her such details.

He asked her if she understood, and she said, yes I understood about every pedal …

but then she cried desperately…

Mr Instructor…there are 3 pedals and I have only 2 feet !!!!!!!😆

At that moment he hardly stopped not to burst into laughter and patiently explained about every pedal and what purpose it served in driving.

Then she regained her confidence because she thought that the 3rd pedal may be used with the hand (thankfully one hand was still available to hold the wheel !).

So the 3 pedals are never used all 3 at once, so you don’t need more than 2 feet.

Good that she didn’t ask how to change gears if she holds the steering wheel with both hands… 😁

You use your left foot to press if needed ONLY the clutch (the left pedal) and your right foot to press the gas pedal (left pedal) or the brake (middle pedal).

You don’t press the brake and the gas at the same time because you seem undecided so the car doesn’t know what you want and it will stop the engine or open the driver’s door automatically and invite you to step out and come back after you decide what you want. Of course, this is a joke, you understand it if you are a driver already.

It was a funny day and the fact he told us the story, we were more confident and lowered our stress for the new day of driving lessons.

And the on day of our exam, we were 4 students on our instructor’s team and 2 (including me) passed the exam on the first attempt.

Since then I have driven a lot from little cars to big ones including Ford Transit and VW Transporters. Once I brought my whole family from niece to grandpa in a Ford Transit, to our cousin’s wedding. It was really fun, as my niece retold me that from her memory. Of course, I remembered that well, even if that was about 15 years ago.
