Design, Direct and Produce Your Destiny

When we look ahead, we need to recognize there are fewer years in our future than what we just left in our past.

Are you directing your destiny? (Photo by Daan Stevens on Unsplash)

NOTE: Since I published this story on my website, my husband passed away and I had death knocking at my door via a heart attack and bi-pass surgery two months later. (See below for some of my stories about my travels through grief and my way out to relief.) So, I am more emphatic about urging all who read this story to NOT fritter your life away. Each day you live is a precious gift. Live it to the utmost. Enjoy it. Be happy. Be thrilled. Love your life. Relish your time. Why? Because you’ll never know when your last moment on Earth will be.

Over twenty-five years ago, I was the chapter president of a women’s business group called “Women in Management.” We were a group of entrepreneurs, as well as corporate managers and officers. As president, I thought we should have a theme for the year — one that we all could work towards. And so, each monthly meeting was geared towards a subject that enhanced the theme.

Design, Direct and Produce Your Destiny.

What triggered this memory was finding an article I wrote in the monthly newsletter we published and mailed to our members. I realized, as I was reading my thoughts from the past, that this theme would be perfect for we women over 60: Design, direct and produce our destiny for our second acts.

To take control of our destinies, we need to do some things we may have never done before. We need to think about things that we may have been afraid of thinking about. We need to face some facts that we may want to hide from.

Otherwise, we’ll regret not taking the action we need to take now.

Now is the time to reevaluate what we’re doing with our lives. We need to acknowledge we’re entering into our life’s second act. And when we look ahead, we need to recognize there are fewer years in our future than what we just left in our past.

Now is the time to be brutally honest with ourselves about what the heck the rest of our lives will be like. We can’t fool ourselves anymore, thinking we have all the time in the world.

We don’t.

Yet, that doesn’t mean we can’t have the most spectacular second half of our life.

We can.

But, we must be deliberate in our goals, plans, and actions to create the life we always wanted.

Here are some questions to help you to start designing your life with intention:

  • Am I really doing what I want to do?
  • Am I really taking care of myself?
  • Am I really living the life I want to live?
  • Am I really having fun and enjoying myself every day?
  • Do I really like my business or profession?
  • Do I really have enough financial resources to continue to live well when I’m 80 and beyond?
  • Have I really experienced a thrilling, enthralling moment or event or accomplishment in my life?

If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, it’s time for you to have a “Come to Jesus” meeting with yourself. Your session isn’t about berating yourself, either. Instead, it’s about getting your rear in gear to create a vision and mission of having an awesome “rest of your life.”

Starting now.

PS If you think you don’t know where to start, you’re not alone!

I have a solution for you.

I created a mini email series for figuring out how satisfied you are with your life in eight major areas. It’s called, How Satisfied Am I, Really? A Life Satisfaction Assessment Quiz. Before you can go to a “new destination” or create a “new life”, you need to know where you’re starting from. You can get a copy of this mini email series here. It’s free. All you have to do is give me your name and the email where I can send it to you.

PPS I’m a widow who now refuses to live a life filled with grief but instead, I live a life filled with joy, happiness, and love.

I’ve written about my journey out of grief and into bodaciousness. Here are two stories about it:
