Derek Chauvin Has Been Found Guilty On All 3 Counts: What This Means For The Mental Health of Black People

This is a start.

In case you live under a rock, today, as of April 20th, 2021, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three counts of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. I have no words.

I bawled my eyes out today knowing that as a Black woman, there is some justice out there for the Black community.

When I first talked about the trial with my family, all they could do was change the conversation. I know that feeling all too well. They knew for a fact that Derek would be acquitted of all charges.

My heart sang a different tune.

I just knew something had to be different this time around.

I felt in my heart and soul there was going to be justice. There’s no way that the first outcry the world beckoned was all for nothing. There had to be something.

When the news came out that this murderer had been found guilty on all three counts… I didn’t know how to react. I mean, I thought they’d charge him for one count and he’d get off scot-free on the rest. I guess you can say it’s a surreal experience.

All of those deaths: Sandra Bland, Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Daunte Wright, and many more. I began tearing up, thinking about all the people we’ve lost.

I still remember seeing that awful picture of Emmett Till’s body my freshman year of high school. I still remember his killer walking away free. I still remember the lies this self-proclaimed “whistle victim” spurred to the public, only to find out decades later that it was all a facade.

Now Derek Chauvin is in jail awaiting a sentence as I write this.

For my fellow Black people out there, I just want us to live in this moment.

Sit in the cut. Enjoy the justice George Floyd deserves. Enjoy the fact that this is a pivotal moment for Black America.

I know it’s hard for Black people to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We’ve been in bondage for so long that when justice comes around, the shocked Pikachu face comes out. It’s unreal. This is just one small step in a whirlwind of change that will happen in our lifetimes.

I want us to take this moment to enjoy the small wins.

Don’t get so hung up on the sentencing that we can’t look back and see the progress we’ve made so far. It’s an astonishing accomplishment. Yes, we still need to hold law enforcement accountable for the deaths of so many other Black lives (e.g. Daunte Wright’s killer), but that doesn’t mean we can’t take a break.

Now is the time to rest easy.

Take a walk, eat a meal with your family, and enjoy your life.

Don’t worry, the rest of those killers are next.

We are going to make sure they get their just due like Derek. We haven’t forgotten about Kim Potter. We haven’t forgotten about the other three police officers responsible for George Floyd’s death. Justice will be served.

And now, I can say that a little more confidently, knowing that something can happen.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get some shut-eye.
