Demystifying Apple‘s Anticipated March 2024 Event
A little rationality might set the expectations in the right direction.
The first Apple event this year is eagerly awaited. Rumors tell us that it will happen this month. Usually, Apple‘s spring events were held in March or April through the last years. But when will we know about the date at which Apple will hold the event and which products will be introduced?
Let‘s explore and answer some questions…
When?
I‘m writing this article on March 3rd, 2024. Until today, no official invitations have been sent out, nor has Apple released a press release that tells us when exactly Apple‘s event will take place. In the past, Apple announced its events two weeks prior. Spring events were mostly held on Tuesdays in the last couple of years.
Taking this into account, we can expect the announcement of the Apple event on March 5th or March 12th. This would give us two possible dates for the March event: March 19th, and March 26th. Otherwise, we will look into an April spring event.
How?
How will Apple present the new products?
There are three options:
- Live event on-site at Apple Campus in Cupertino or in another location like New York.
- Video event like the “Scary Fast“ event last October.
- No event, just a press release or a series of press releases.
Let’s be honest, everyone who is a fan of Apple tech hopes for the first option. But if we get a live event depends on the number of new products and the degree of improvement. It only makes sense to have a huge event if Apple introduces new products with major changes/improvements for at least two product categories.
Option 2 is also very likely. Apple mastered the craft of video events. This would be likely if we only get new models in one product category with medium changes.
Last but not least, the press release would be an option for new models with minor changes like we have seen with the iPads in 2022.
Speaking of the iPads, this fact makes option 3 least likely…
What?
Let’s get the elephant out of the room — we finally have to get new iPads in the spring of 2024. This is what is rumored most. The iPad Pro models seem to get major upgrades like OLED panels, a re-oriented front-facing camera, and new accessories like an Apple Pencil 3 and a second version of the Magic Keyboard.
Alongside the iPad Pro models with slightly increased screen sizes of 11.1” and 13”, new iPad Airs in two sizes (11” and 12.9”) are rumored.
Let’s start a counter: two iPad Pro models and potentially two iPad Air models make a total of four.
Is there any obvious reason why Apple should leave out the regular 10.9” iPad? No, so let’s count this in and set our counter to a total of five new models for the iPad.
What else is overdue? Yes, of course, the 13.6” and 15.3” M3 MacBook Air models — which sets our counter to seven new models from two product categories.
And we are still missing the M3 and M3 Pro Mac mini models as well. Let’s get them in as well, and set our counter to nine new products.
In spring, Apple usually also reveals a new color for the iPhone and the iPhone Plus as well as some new Apple Watch band colors.
You see, the number of potential product releases is quite high. It would make no sense for Apple to further delay the releases of the M3 Macs since we are only about one year ahead of the M4 release.
Going back to “How?”: Don’t you think option 1 is getting more and more likely?
Conclusion
All rumors about an Apple March event might be silenced or proven within the next two weeks. Regarding the huge number of potential product releases, it is very likely that Apple might hold an actual live event.
Although there is a huge number of products still waiting for an update, we might get a glimpse of the new product releases one day before the event through the FCC website with the new model numbers.
