Summary

Demotivation among employees has a more significant negative impact on a company's performance than motivation has a positive impact.

Abstract

The article "Monday Motivation" discusses the often overlooked issue of demotivation in the workplace. It suggests that while leaders can effectively motivate their teams, their ability to demotivate has a more substantial adverse effect on a company's overall performance. Demotivated employees exhibit behaviors such as grumpiness and a lack of innovation or improvement ideas, a state the Germans refer to as 'innerlich kündigen'—quitting on the inside. This phenomenon, where employees do only the bare minimum, is argued to be more detrimental to a company than the benefits reaped from having highly motivated workers. The article emphasizes that while the positive effects of motivation are well-integrated into management culture, the negative consequences of demotivation are not given enough attention.

Opinions

  • The impact of demotivation on a company's performance is greater than that of motivation.
  • Demotivated employees may exhibit negative behaviors such as grumpiness and a lack of initiative for innovations or improvements.
  • The concept of 'innerlich kündigen' describes employees who have mentally checked out and are only doing the minimum required.
  • The negative effects of demotivation are underestimated in management practices compared to the focus on the benefits of high motivation.
  • A demotivated employee's detrimental effect on a company outweighs the advantages gained from a highly motivated employee.

Demotivation among Employees Has a Bigger Impact on a Company than Motivation

Let’s focus on demotivation for a difference. As well as the leader can motivate his team, he can also demotivate them with an even bigger impact on the company's overall performance.

There are various side effects of demotivated employees. They reach from grumpiness in the office to fewer innovations and bottom-up improvement ideas. As the Germans have a phrase for everything, this behavior is named ‘innerlich kündigen.’ It means something like quitting on the inside and just doing the bare minimum.

The positive side effects of highly motivated workers are well known and applied in management culture, but there is too little emphasis on the negative side effects of demotivation. An employee quitting on the inside hurts a company way more than it could ever benefit from a highly motivated one.
