Some Republicans wanted Trump

The Republicans ousted their Speaker of the House.

After a simple vote in the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy was ousted as the Republican Speaker of the House. With Matt Gaetz leading the charge, there were not a lot of people who agreed with him in his quest to remove McCarthy. Seven other Republicans did join Gaetz, and McCarthy was gone as Speaker.

It took McCarthy fifteen times of voting to get elected to the Speakership. With him out, Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan vied for the position. Since they could not get the support that was needed from their fellow Republicans, they dropped out.

Then the Republicans chose a new Speaker with one time of voting. It was a little known person who has just been in the House of Representatives since the election of 2016. That is the same year that Gaetz was elected. With all the well respected and long serving members of the Republican Party in the House, the new Speaker was surprising.

Some Republicans blamed Democrats for their chaos in the House and expected Democrats to side with them to choose a Speaker. Some mentioned choosing Trump to be their Speaker.

Democrats were not willing to help the Democrats and were voting instead for their own leader. Of course, they did not have enough votes so that was not to be.

It would have been unprecedented to have a Speaker from the party that is not in power, but it has been done in some state legislatures. Apparently, there are no rules against such a thing happening.

Some of the chaos is over regarding the Republican Speaker of the House for the time being. From being an almost unknown person, the new Speaker is currently in the news on a daily basis.
