Delightful Visit to Missoula, Montana
including a day trip to Lincoln

In June, my partner Kevin and I spent an enjoyable week in Missoula. He had lived in Montana for nineteen years, with more than a dozen of them in Missoula at the end of his time there.
By contrast, my experience with Missoula had been limited to a single day I had spent there in 1974. To say that I didn’t remember much about it would be an understatement.
This was our first time there together since Kevin returned to his native California in 2018.
We had the good fortune to be staying with one of his friends in a neighborhood that was walkable to much of the city. Walkable to me, that is, considering that I am used to managing without a car and I easily clock in at anywhere from five to seven miles a day.
On our first full day in town, we headed to the campus of the University of Montana and walked around.

I love university campuses! This one has a mix of older and newer structures, with several under construction.
Sculpture in the Wild, Lincoln
The next day, we took a ride of about an hour and a half to see Sculpture in the Wild, an art installation in Lincoln.

It was remarkable to see the way artists had constructed installations using natural materials. The pieces on display are assembled in a wooded setting with some clearings to make for easy viewing of the artwork.
Downtown ambiance
I enjoyed our visits to the downtown area. I found the architecture to be graceful, charming, and welcoming.

Kevin had been a wine salesman when he lived here, so he knew lots of the restaurateurs and barkeeps. We ate and drank quite well during that week.
The crown jewel of Missoula is its recently opened spanking new Missoula Public Library. One of our friends was instrumental in raising funds for having it constructed. She gave us a tour of the building, where we could see that it was very well used by the public, with ample access to computers, reading rooms, conference rooms, and a makerspace for using tools and technology for educational, recreational, and business pursuits.

Residential neighborhoods
I walked quite a lot in the residential neighborhoods, finding several different walking routes from our host’s home to get to downtown.

Though most of the residential architecture was built along traditional lines, there were many unusual and innovative buildings as well. There were single family homes, duplexes, and apartments throughout.

We had a terrific time in this relaxing small city. We enjoyed it so much that we mentioned to several of Kevin’s friends that we would be happy to do a home exchange with them for a few weeks. We’ve done home exchange before, and we are comfortable having people stay in our home while we are in theirs.
In May, June, July, and August, Allegiant Air has reasonably priced nonstop flights from Oakland to Missoula, which makes for streamlined travel without having to transit via Seattle or Las Vegas.
