Definition of freedom
is it really acting without consequence?
Recent events inspired this article. I honestly have also been thinking about this very topic for a bit now.
When we initially think of Freedom, stories of Mel Gibson movie The Patriot comes to mind. I have not been through any real wars. I have not “fought for” freedom to any degree. I have never been a slave, as we know it.
I have been free to gain an education. I have been free to move about anywhere as I please. Wait, not really as I please, but respectfully in harmony with those around me.
I don’t spit at the side of the street, where someone else could step on it. I don’t go do #1 washroom in the middle of the street in respect of those around me. I don’t throw garbage out the window, where it could hit those walking by. I don’t throw garbage out the car window, I collect it and throw it at a proper garbage bin.
I put on my seat belts when I start driving or riding in a car. I follow the traffic lights to cross the street. I do this, I do that. I live in a civil society.
Now you ask, why am I going on about all these insignificant things?
Well, back home, I have seen people throw garbage out the window of an apartment, sometimes piss out of windows (where it can potentially be blown onto the balcony of someone who left their washed clothes to dry there).
I have seen people riding buses with broken windows and vomit riding down its sides. I have seen people with legs pretty much cut off because they decided to put it up on the dashboard. The accident they were on, they went out the windshield leg first, destroying their legs.
I have seen people throw out trash and the sides of the highways filled with it.
Guess who has more freedom, me in Canada, or those back home? Guess what the cost of freedom is? Guess who suffers for the “freedom”?
Back home most people don’t bother thinking about the consequences. As a result, we have dirty streets filled with garbage all over the place.
Freedom only belongs to some
The insurrection of the united states government building by the mob fundamentally violated one of the most fundamental freedoms of any person. That is “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” By fighting for their own freedoms of not wearing masks, and vaccinating, they violated the freedoms of others to life and liberty.
How? Well if you are immune-compromised, it means you don’t have the freedom to move about in fear of catching the simplest of cold. What if by not wearing a mask, I pass on this disease to this person’s grandson/daughter. Unknowingly they infect their grandparent. This leads to their hospitalisation, or in worst case scenario, death.
I have lost a great aunt exactly this way last year. She ended up getting Covid. She never went anywhere, she was too weak to do so. To think all people had to do was follow public health protocols and she would still be alive today. She has lost her right to life for our “freedom”.
The other side of things is does the government have the right to dictate what they do? Isn’t the right to “self-determination” one of the fundamental freedoms in existence?
Who gets to have freedom. Sometimes I see freedom as a very oxi-moronic don’t you think? Sometimes the freedom of “life” leads to violation of freedom of “self-determination”. On the other hand, if one’s act of free will leads to someone’s death, it is murder. This means the murderer forfeits their freedom, as soon as this right to life is violated.
How do you prosecute someone for the mere act of not wearing a mask, instead of driving a knife down someone’s belly? It had the same effect. It was an act, a choice that caused a violation of loss of right to live.
Freedom is a good thing?
I always was taught that freedom was a good thing. Free to choose what you will do, what education you want to receive. What kind of company you will keep.
Russian soldiers during world war 2, were shot if they decided to retreat at any point of the initial wars to win within their “motherland”. They had no freedom to refuse.
When the Germans invaded Europe during this time, many countries fell under slavery. Some fought and died, but many didn’t fight back, in order to preserve life.
That was their freedom of choice, wasn’t it? They chose what others thought as cowardice. This choice led them to preserve their life, which is a fundamental right. On the other hand, they chose to fight, which is also their freedom of choice. This “bravery” led many of them to lose their lives.
You always have a choice, freedom is a myth
Freedom is an amazing concept, but it is only a concept. It is a myth. It doesn’t truly exist. If I didn’t prove that earlier, think about this. When you have a family that fully depends on your income. This income must be high enough to meet at least the basic needs of the family that depends on you.
The “freedom” you have is how to earn this income. If you chose to earn in criminally (because your chosen occupation doesn’t pay enough), then you have succeeded in at least one consequence of your choice. This consequence, off course, is your family’s needs are being met.
What if you received bribe to achieve this consequence? What did you get bribed for? Approving the safety report (or lack their of) for a bridge that is used by 1000’s of people very day? This bribe got your family to have a full belly.
However, if that bridge eventually breaks because it wasn’t really as safe as you have attested to, you are now also responsible for the deaths and injuries that occur due to bridge collapse. Welcome to your “freedom” to choose. Let your family starve, or let many families lose loved ones. Sobering thought isn’t it?
If you still don’t believe freedom is a myth, think about why you are waking up every morning, or evening if you work nights. What happens if you don’t go to work tomorrow? Do you have the “freedom” of skipping work? Think about how “free” you are.
