December Writing Prompts

The Kraken Lore writing prompts…. Use them if you dare… muahahaha

Fantasy village in the winter. Generated by author with Nightcafe AI

Preamble:

For many people, December is a magical time of the year. In some places, the snow, ice, and temporary sleep of plants (and some animals) transform the world for a while. There are many festivals and holidays in December including (but not limited to) Christmas, Hanukkah, Rohatsu, Krampusnacht, Kwanzaa, Zarathosht Diso, Hogmanay, New Year’s Eve, and the Winter Solstice.

Many of these include gift-giving and a celebration of light, often through lighting candles. For some folks, December means joy, good food, and quality time with friends and family. For others, December is full of the stress of extra expenses, the crush of unmet familial expectations, and perhaps even seasonal depression and a holiday spent cold and alone.

Whether you need a break from your in-laws or a mood-lifting distraction, I hope you will take some time to explore one (or more!) of these fantastical prompts!

You’re welcome to submit these responses anywhere you like, but consider The Kraken Lore as your home. If it’s elsewhere, please tag one of the TKL editors (names below) so we can celebrate your piece!

Prompt #1:

A massive snowstorm closes all the schools for a whole week. When school resumes, a handful of students start to suspect that one of their teachers came back different and is not quite human anymore….

What changes do the students see in their teacher? What is it? And more importantly, is it friendly or dangerous?

Prompt #2:

Choose a famous Christmas carol, replace one of the important words with the word “Kraken” and write a story based on the new song. For example:

Carol of the Bells → Carol of the Kraken. (Perhaps this is an opportunity for poetry and writing the lyrics to this new carol? Perhaps singing this particular carol will summon a Kraken to you? Perhaps Carol got lost at sea as a baby and was raised by the Kraken?)

Example 2: Joy to the World → Joy to the Kraken. (Perhaps this story is about a Kraken-worshipping cult?)

Prompt #3:

Make up a new December holiday and tell the story of one specific holiday gathering. Who celebrates it? (Elves? Dragons? Vampires? Aliens?) How is it celebrated? What is the purpose of this holiday? How long does it last? What time of day is it celebrated? What rituals are involved? Is there any controversy in the way it’s celebrated? Does everything go as planned at this particular celebration, or does something unexpected happen?

BONUS/ Outtake prompt: A unicorn has always dreamed of helping to pull Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. What happens when this unicorn shows up in the North Pole asking to join the reindeer team?

A few things to consider:

1. Feel free to use these prompts to inspire your writing and consider publishing your story in The Kraken Lore.

2. Please use the tag “The Kraken Lore” so the Kraken Crew (and our editors!) can easily find them.

3. Challenge your fellow writers if you like! How does that work? Like this example: I challenge my fellow TKL editors Bradan Writes Stories, Jonathon Sawyer, and Jay C Wells to write a TKL December prompt story!
