Summary

Christina M. Ward invites poets to participate in #Wingsweek, a themed writing challenge focused on "things with wings," running from July 20-27, with the aim of fostering creative expression and community engagement.

Abstract

The website content introduces a creative initiative called #Wingsweek, spearheaded by Christina M. Ward. This initiative follows a series of themed writing prompts, including #flowerweek, #Starweek, and #Heartweek, and is designed to inspire poets to write about winged subjects. Participants are encouraged to compose poems featuring wings, tag them with #Wingsweek, and share them online, ensuring to tag Ward to receive her readership and feedback. The prompt is not only a celebration of winged creatures and imaginative themes but also marks a personal milestone for Ward, as the 25th of July is her birthday. The event is intended to uplift the community and propel it into a more positive half of the year, with Ward drawing inspiration from her favorite writer, Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows, and referencing her own works that celebrate winged beings.

Opinions

  • Christina M. Ward expresses a deep passion for writing about "things with wings," indicating a personal affinity for the theme.
  • Ward finds inspiration in the lyrics of Adam Duritz, particularly his poetic imagery related to wings and flight.
  • The inclusion of her own poems about butterflies, birds, and faeries suggests a belief in the power of these subjects to inspire and evoke emotion.
  • The act of tagging poems with #Wingsweek and encouraging participants to tag her in their posts reflects a desire to create a sense of community and shared experience among poets.
  • By aligning the prompt with her birthday, Ward personalizes the event, potentially deepening the connection with her audience and adding a celebratory aspect to the challenge.

PROMPT — #WINGSWEEK

Dear Poets, Are You Ready for #Wingsweek?

I love writing about “things with wings,” and I thought you might too

First, Tapan Avasthi led us through a beautiful prompt of #flowerweek. Then Jenny Justice led us through #Starweek. Then Heidi Franklin gave us #Heartweek.

Each prompt is 7 days of writing with the current theme and tag.

Now I’d like to propose a week of my own.

I LOVE writing about things with wings. Bees, faeries, fireflies, birds, angels, ME. Consider this quote by my absolute favorite writer — the lyricist and musician Adam Duritz of the Counting Crows:

When I think of heaven Deliver me in a black-winged bird I think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathers And all other instruments of faith and sex and God In the belly of a black-winged bird Don’t try to feed me ’Cause I’ve been here before and I deserve a little more

I belong in the service of the Queen I belong anywhere but in between She’s been crying, I’ve been thinking And I am the rain king — Rain King, the Counting Crows

This is my favorite version of the song — for inspiration!

I have often written about winged creatures, like in a few of my signature poems: A World Without Butterflies, A World Without Birds, and In Search of Faeries. I’d like to write some more of this inspirational, winged poetry.

I invite you to write along with me!

  • Write a poem featuring the topic of “wings.”
  • TAG your poem #Wingsweek.
  • Post wherever you choose, but TAG ME so I can read your responses!

This prompt will run from July 20–27 (and the 25th is my BIRTHDAY so let’s see those beautiful poems!)

Let’s give this latter half of July the wings to carry us into a better half of the year!
