Summary

An author on Medium critiques the platform for not adequately addressing the issue of AI-generated content and bot-driven engagement, calling for improved detection and reporting mechanisms.

Abstract

The author of the article expresses concern over the prevalence of seemingly AI-generated content on Medium, particularly highlighting the profile of "Mihai Eminescu," which shows suspicious levels of engagement and similarities in comment patterns. The author points out that the articles in question, despite receiving significant claps and comments, appear to lack genuine human touch and may be part of a larger scheme involving bot farms. The author has reported the account but fears that many such accounts exist, exploiting the platform's partner program and potentially undermining the integrity of the content ecosystem. To combat this, the author suggests Medium should implement an AI watch system, allowing users to report suspected AI content, and flag articles with a "suspected AI" banner, while also reviewing the financial dynamics of the platform that may be enabling such exploits.

Opinions

  • The author is skeptical of the authenticity of Mihai Eminescu's articles and the genuine nature of the engagement they receive.
  • There is a belief that the comments on the articles are generated by AI and lack authentic human responses.
  • The author is disheartened by the potential exploitation of Medium's platform through the use of AI-generated content and bot farms.
  • A call to action is made for Medium to improve its monitoring and reporting systems to maintain the quality and integrity of the content shared on the platform.
  • The author suggests that the current state of affairs is disheartening for genuine writers and undermines the value of human-created content.
  • The author is knowledgeable about AI, having created an entire website using ChatGPT, and is therefore confident in their ability to identify AI-generated content.
  • The author implies that Medium's current measures are insufficient and that a more proactive approach is needed to address the issue of AI-generated content and engagement manipulation.

Dear Medium, Do Better…

Hey readers do I have a fun profile to show you. While doing my usual follow and read routine I came across a truly impressive profile.

Mihai Eminescu is really out doing themselves. Just look at the last two pieces that he published.

Truly riveting material, just look at all the engagement!

Wow! 11 hours and already 1K claps and 20 comments! And such an intriguing subject!

Lets look at a few of those 20 comments and see what his readers are thinking, shall we.

So many authentic comments, how does he do it!

Just look at Minnie, shes so passionate about his work. Even used the word underscore, fancy.

Don’t forget about Oscar, this article has left him reflecting on the future implications of power supply technology.

You don’t say Mika, I wasn’t aware of the ongoing efforts to enhance power supply technology.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of these profiles and see if we can spot a pattern.

Mihai, with his 7 followers, insists this is a must-read.
Irna, mentions the historical context, I hadn’t thought of that…
Remember our friend Minnie? Coincedentally she only has 7 followers too.

It surely isn’t a coincedence that all of his comments sound similar and seem generated by AI.

But I am sure he wrote the piece at least… Take a look and tell me what you think?

Not AI at all, very human indeed.

But wait there’s more!

Just when you thought our brilliant wordsmith Mihai Eminescu couldn’t duplicate his results, think again.

He published this story at the same time! Just look at all the engagement it has. I am so intrigued by solid state hard drives and their juxtaposition to classic disc based drives. I can’t wait to dive into his expertise! Let’s see what all his loyal fans are saying.

The same people, wow, thats loyalty!

Well look at that, Minnie, Mika, and Snoopy are equally passionate about computer storage as they are power supplies.

Zapeceala said it Beautifully encapsulates, thats fancy talk!

Notice the similarity in the emotions and word usage by his different loyal fans?

He had to write this article, he wouldn’t publish two stories back to back using AI without labeling them as such. Nobody would be that dishonest.

Technically perfect writing, same length sentences. nothing said…

With all this engagement for these two riveting pieces I have to ask, what am I doing wrong?

Medium Get Your Shit together

This person is clearly churning out AI articles and then using a bot farm to manipulate engagement. I have already reported the account, but there is probably 10,000 of them starting today.

Medium needs to implement some form of AI watch. I can spot it a mile a way. I built an entire website using ChatGPT and have read thousands of words writen by it. I am not the only one. We all can spot it. Give us the ability to report as “suspected AI” and create a warning system that puts a banner at the top of the article as “suspected AI” and remove it from the partner program.

As for the obvious bot farm, get it together. Did they all pay $5 a month? If so, is it a net wash? Or is there an exploit that is being taken advantage of.

I love writing on here. As I said I created an entire website using AI and wanted to write so I started writing here.

When I encounter accounts like this cheating it is disheartening.
