Dear Medium…

Social Media platforms that both help and hinder the creative soul

A discussion with a fellow writer Miles Etherton brought this up for me to share from my observations of Social Media platforms, especially the ones that encourage creativity with a monetary tag to it.

There is a psychosis created by constantly wanting to write a viral / curated piece hoping you will hit a mass audience to bring in the muller and that is not healthy or wise in my eyes. Too many Writers are wanting to earn the money that so called Top Writers are earning and forget to write something of substance.

Writing should never be a ‘numbers’ game…when you become obsessed with the number of claps, comments, followers, views to justify your posts and constantly comparing and scrutinizing your work alongside others thus creating an inferiority or superiority complex which is most definitely not healthy for the creative eye.

C. S. Lewis once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

We all have our own unique writing styles to execute our views, observations and wisdoms and this is what makes us creative to begin with.

1 Corinthians 4:7

Comparison is the thief of joy and the stretcher of truth. Comparison says “I am ill-equipped for the task at hand.” The truth is God has given me everything I need for the plans he has set before me.

I think we can most definitely learn from all the BIG PLATFORMS and create something just as good, or fairer or appreciative of creativity.

Creativity morphed into a psychosis A neurosis exacerbated daily Increased levels of tension and anxiety Synopsis of wanting to please Words formulated hastily Chasing fame and popularity Cents to dollars added to the writer’s charity Worthiness of words or the perfect photo Abundant for some whilst poverty for others Endless chastisement in one’s capabilities Will I get noticed and curated? Does that define my popularity? Does that allow me to sit with the Gods of notoriety? Or is it a complete clickbait bullshit reality? Nothing but a numbers game Algorithms to follow and master You either fit into it or you don’t When your soul is made bare Yet the appreciation is just not there You gotta keep writing and just not care…
