Dear Friends: Are You Using All the WRONG Moves When You Read and Engage on Medium?
Read this and see why your stories are losing money!
My dear Medium family and friends, if you never listened to any of the writing advice that I’ve provided, PLEASE stop and listen to this.
NO — In fact, don’t just want you to read/listen to the advice, and go on about your business.
There seems to be a lot of that going around on this platform, so much so, that I find myself addressing the issue more and more.
Why is EVERYONE Sleeping on this Valuable Feature on their Profile Page?
I hate to come off like the former educator that I am, but come on people, really…?
When will we stop complaining about all the ways that our stories are being overlooked and no one is connecting and reaching out to you in a meaningful way?
You all know the saying:
- Are you sure you’re performing your part as best you can?
- If you are, perhaps the “partners” you’re dancing with are not.
The truth of the matter is, some of us are failing to get the dance steps right.
If you’re a writer who recently joined Medium and you’re coming from another platform, could you possibly be trying to use old dance moves in a brand new routine.
Sometimes that can work out okay, but sometimes it’s a total disaster.
In order to be in sync with your readers and the members you engage with…
Make sure you’re dancing the same dance as your followers
It’s crucial to make sure you’re consistently giving your audience the content that they follow you for and want you to provide them with.
It’s equally important that the writers whose stories you read, are just as interactive with you and the stories you publish for the community.
If you’re not seeing the positive reading results that you expect, based on your own efforts, it may be time to switch to partners who are doing the same dance as you.
👉 If you’re not already a good dancer, practice on a regular basis and learn the steps.
👉 But make sure you’re practicing all the right moves yourself, before you try to start dancing with a partner.
- Do they genuinely like what you like to write?
- Do you sincerely care what they like to read?
Just like literally learning the wrong dance moves can be clumsy and cause physical collisions, something similar can occur when you figuratively dance with members on Medium.
KEEP IN MIND: This is why members oftentimes end up offending one another, or rubbing each other the wrong way.
On the other hand, when you genuinely read and engage correctly, you get to know your partners, and how to approach them, according to their individual personalities.
In fact, some partners, you’ll want to dance with again and again. Some of my regulars that I love to spend time on the dance floor include:

Needless to say, these 25 dance partners are but a drop in the bucket, compared to all the talented individuals I connect with whenever I get a chance.
They are simply the names that come to mind right now, when I think about getting out on the floor to have a good ole’ time.

When you think of your followers and the writers you read in this way, WHO’S on your dance card?
Whoever they are, just make sure you’re not stepping all over their feet, and vice versa…
Final Thoughts
If you find yourself not getting the benefits from being a FOM, stop, evaluate the situation, and consider what the real reason could be.
: 👉 Check your dance moves. Check your dance card.
Don’t end up veering off course, and learning the right routine for the wrong occasion.
📌 REMEMBER: You can not write or interact with all audiences or all members in the exact same way, so do the dance accordingly.
You have the power and it’s totally in your control, to overcome the obstacles and challenges you may be facing, just as long as you’re willing to take any necessary action.
If the followers that you find yourself engaging with, just don’t seem to be engaging with you, get yourself some new dance partners — PERIOD.
