Dear Deepak Chopra: Here Are the Ways You’ve Changed My Life

Synchronicities and inner spiritual work on the path to realizing my true life’s purpose

This year, I had an awakening that led me to understand that I am a healer. There has been one person of great inspiration who has shown up at various times through the years toward this moment, and that is Deepak Chopra. I don’t idolize him, but I recognize that destiny has placed his appearances in my journey at important times.

For that, I am grateful. And I finally understand.

A synchronicity is an event that appears in your life with meaning. Many call them “coincidences” but I see now that nothing is a coincidence. I believe that the positioning of Deepak Chopra in my life at certain moments had great significance, bringing me to finally look within to find my inner purpose.

I want to tell you why he is a big reason why I am embarking on a career of holistic health coaching, and how events have led me to him.

“I am ever present to those who have realized me in every creature. Seeing all life as my manifestation, they are never separated from me.”

— Lord Krishna, the Bhagavad Gita

Korea and getting started with meditation

When I lived in South Korea, I downloaded some guided meditations by Deepak on iTunes. This was the first time I’d ever encountered his work.

A very short time later, I was meditating a lot. During meditation one day, I had my first glimpse of pure awareness and non-attachment. It was incredible. I felt some real effects of connecting with the oneness.

Summer Camp

Years later, I was employed at a company that held a “summer camp” event for employees, which was exactly that: a camp in the summer. I was shocked at the moment when one of the co-founders announced on stage, “next we have a special guest for you. Deepak Chopra!”

My jaw dropped.

He led a group meditation for thousands of us. I was filled with awe. I’ve been told that I looked like I was glowing. That’s what happens when the spiritual guides are making sure you get what you need.

I wasn’t doing work that really fulfilled me, but his presence and the group meditation was a taste of what I needed to become.

JavaScript in Carlsbad

In the following year, I made a career change to software engineering. I got a scholarship to attend a JavaScript conference that took place in Carlsbad, California. I was wandering around the conference hotel, which was in a large resort, and came upon the Chopra center. It was simply a part of the hotel.

Looking back, I know I wasn’t on the right path — I was very attached to my status and greed — and so my spiritual guides through serendipity once again planted Deepak in my path. It did make me stop and think, “should I be here for JavaScript or for Chopra?”

Pandemic awakening

This past summer, after my husband removed himself from my life, I began to read about the chakras. That led me to read about Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old philosophy of living. Ayurveda changed my life, and I just keep reading about it. And that led me back to Deepak Chopra.

Unsurprisingly, he is a thought leader in that space and has written extensively about Ayurveda.

The deeper I got, the more it became apparent that I wanted to help others improve their health and happiness through Ayurveda. But I wasn’t sure how.

Divine timing

Someone said to me, “maybe you shouldn’t be a software engineer.” It was about six weeks ago now, and the idea that I would have a career in anything other than coding was not a possibility in my mind. Certainly, health coaching and healing had not occurred to me as a focus of my efforts.

I want to emphasize that this was six weeks ago. It feels like a decade ago already. How quickly life can make its twists and turns!

On the same day that this person said this to me, one hour later, I got an email from the chopra company asking me: “Do you want to play a role in helping others thrive and find purpose?” It invited me to a webinar about a concept very familiar to me: changing careers.

I hesitated at first. But since this person had put the idea that I am not meant to be an engineer in my head earlier that day, I dwelled on it for a moment. I was starting to wake up to the notion that I am an empath at the time, and spiritual things were starting to creep into my thoughts.

Of course, I signed up for the webinar and attended it.

I want to tell you, Deepak, if you ever read this: thank you. I am so grateful. And to Devi Brown, Peter Kirchmer, and all your staff. Your company created a course that can be done by a single mom with a full-time job like me. I don’t have to quit my job to start on this path. This is attainable.

I enrolled to start in January.

It took me about one day for it to finally settle in: I am a healer, and this is what I need to be doing.

Starting a side hustle

Since then, I have interviewed a handful of wellness practitioners of various types, all who have given me an abundance of wisdom about starting a business. I’ve started to build a website. (I love building websites and now I have a real reason for it!) I’ve written down about a million business ideas. This is happening. It’s starting.

I did a kind of shamanic meditation journey into my inner soul at the Bioneers conference last weekend. I talked to my subtle self and it spoke through my voice, forcing me to say out loud: “I am a healer.” It was surprising but completely obvious to me after that.

Already thinking of how I can change lives, I am paving my own way to do so, relying on divine inspiration and messages from the other side to guide me.

I’ve had sleepless nights thinking of how I can get myself to where I need to go. I have been writing constantly on Medium, seeing this as an immediate way to elevate the collective consciousness in my small way. The universe keeps sending me messages that I am on the right path when I am writing.

I can’t wait to do so much more.

Onward

Finally listening to my inner voice, I realize now that the whole point of me being alive is to teach others to heal themselves. It’s not to go on trips to other countries for my own exploration, or to barely survive paycheck to paycheck staying in my own lane, or to spend day after day like a hamster on a treadwheel. This does nothing for other souls.

My life-force is aching to reach out to others.

Chopra Center: thank you from my entire being, and see you in class.

I know it’s hard to keep an open heart When even friends seem out to harm you But if you could heal a broken heart Wouldn’t time be out to charm you
