The 1st mistake you can and must avoid

The reason you should understand why this mistake is deadly to the success of your business. By avoiding it your chances of success are increased.

This mistake I made early on in my first business venture. I want you to know I’m speaking to you having the experience of starting and operating several small businesses throughout my life.

This is not about me but about how you can avoid my 1st mistakes. Not knowing about business.

Failure is a great teacher, and I think when you make mistakes and you recover from them and you treat them as valuable learning experiences, then you’ve got something to share.

Steve Harvey

Knowing about business

What needs to be understood first, operating a business involves a different skill set than the skills needed for what your business is providing (product, service).

You have the training, experience, and skills to perform your craft with confidence. Now your want to go out and sell your services, and crafts to others.

How do you do that? That’s the business side of the business.

Isn’t my business, business?

No. Unless your business is connected to the inside of business operations and management, It’s not.

Not yet anyway.

You need to realize the skills, knowledge, and experience you have are most likely not in business management.

Business management involves a whole other set of skills and knowledge.

Nothing you can’t learn and something you must.

To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge.

Confucius

What are the differences?

A world of differences. Unless you are skilled in such aspects of business like…

  • Business planning. Without a well-thought-out document. You won’t start off in the right direction. It will be your map and guidance.
  • Finance. Business involves money. To be successful in business you must understand how to use money and financing to grow and scale your business. Let’s not forget taxes.
  • Marketing. Understanding marketing gives you insight as to who your customers are and how and where to reach them. Are they looking for what you offer, and why?
  • Advertising. Advertising is the extension of marketing. This is what medium will best get you in contact with your potential customers.
  • Human Resources. If your business will require the employment of others. There is much you’ll need to know. Some laws and regulations strictly apply to employees.

Don’t be naive and reckless. Please don’t be ill-advised.

You must take all these things into consideration before you do anything else.

You can learn about all these aspects of a business. The purpose of knowing these details is to make your business succeed. Not that you will need to be an expert in all these skills. You must understand how and why these are essential elements of business operations.
