Summary

Daydreaming is seen as a deliberate and beneficial activity for many in managing their personal and work lives, despite traditional views that equate it with a lack of concentration.

Abstract

Instead, it suggests that individuals now engage in daydreaming intentionally, often using it as a coping mechanism or a source of inspiration in both their personal lives and work environments. This phenomenon is widespread, with many people reporting that they disconnect from their immediate surroundings to imagine themselves in different, often more pleasant, scenarios. The article notes that this trend is particularly embraced by creative individuals, such as writers, who use daydreaming to develop characters and storylines. While there are concerns about the impact of such mental escapes on focus and productivity, especially in critical settings like team meetings, the author acknowledges the potential benefits, including stress relief and creative enhancement. The prevalence of daydreaming is also seen as a reflection of the world's current state, with the pandemic highlighting the need for mental escapism.

Recently, I garnered much excitement on one of my social media pages when I mentioned the word, “Daydreaming”. This prompted me to pause and take a closer look at what sparked so much excitement about this topic.

It has ben a common belief that daydreaming was a result of the inability to concentrate. But, after my recent interactions with my virtual peers and friends, I am not so sure. I am now convinced that daydreaming in our present day is a deliberate action. There is moderate concern on my behalf that many individuals detach themselves from their current state of mind and affairs on purpose.

Their comments were almost unanimous with an air of arrogance. Some boasted that daydreaming was essential to get them through both their personal and workdays. Do you understand the ramifications of this? During critical, team meetings, most of the attendees are on mental vacations to tropical destinations or perusing the aisles of the grocery store in search of dinner. How are corporations and companies still functioning?

There also appears to be a clandestine movement present as many individuals were encouraging others to begin daydreaming immediately. They spoke as if there is an alternate universe where they all meet daily.

Daydreaming appears to benefit the creatives in the group. Mostly, my fellow writers. They shared how daydreaming allows them to create the characters in their books. I was intrigued about the fact that so many authors live their novels long before they are published.

With so much happening in the world around us, I can understand the need to get away from it all. This is confirmed by the increase in travel, even during a pandemic. These vacations are nothing more than opportunities to take mental pictures that can be utilized when persons return to their normal lives. They store visions and memories of sandy beaches or snow-capped mountains, just to ignore those around them when needed.

These revelations require a change in our mindset. We must come to grips with the fact that as we converse with others, they are not nodding their head in agreement, they are shaking virtual ocean water from their hair. Additionally, as we cross the street, the driver of that approaching car is not actually looking at you but scanning the horizon for fish.

This also explains why fast-food restaurants rarely give you the correct order. It would require the person taking your order to be fully focused as well as the person filling the order. Good luck with that happening.

There is an upside to this. When you tell your best friend a secret, chances are they are not listening to you and thus cannot use that information against you later. Likewise, if you are giving someone a piece of your mind, they will forget about it moments later.

For those of you that made it this far without wandering off mentally, as you can see, there are pros and cons to daydreaming. All I can advise you to do is travel responsibly, mentally, and physically.
