Day Long Into The Night

A prose poem about friendships and loves

Bing Image Creator

I’m grateful for gentleness whenever and wherever I find it.

It has been a lifetime of highs and lows, waves coming and going, crashing and rolling, gentle, angry, shallow, and deep, but loving someone without holding back is the highest high of all.

Sure, I hear the echoes of memories playing with me, falling down, climbing, jumping, never still enough to stay up front. They’re just an echo of a playful heart.

Anxieties, too, that have lived with me a day long into the night seem less important now. I am arriving at some new kind of peace — demanding nothing of my brutish heart. What I have done has always been done deliberately, never left to blind trust. I did not expect things to change one day, but for us, things do change.

Writing is different every day, though the end result is most times predictable.

Sunday seems as good a time as any to write words, always with the hope I’ll be loved through them but capable of disappointing even the most enthusiastic reader. Ideas are like orphans, hardly ever accompanied by plans or completeness. They just hang out there, like training shoes flipped over telephone lines on the side of a rarely traveled road. On Sundays, God rewards the dreamer with continued dreams.

When I’m alone at night, and there’s no one to comfort me, I crawl beneath a soft and warm blanket. I wonder only if I will get from the dark to daylight. Let me stay a while more; I’ve still so much to say.

Maybe I just get soppy when I’m home.

Let me share a smile more with you; come, then, share my blanket. I’ll hold you through the dark to the daylight.
