💯 STORY CHALLENGE

One of my original stories from my first week on Medium is now revisited. With new life breathed into it I present it to you all, I hope you all enjoy it.

Seven years of hard work had been endured for the event planned at Scion Laboratories. The brilliant minds slaved away behind locked doors buried deep beneath the Earth’s crust with no communication to the surface world. Today they would finally discover if their suffered years were in vain.

Doctor Swan glanced over her calculations for the hundredth time. She checked and rechecked the numbers with each time her brow furrowed slightly more than the last.

“We’re about to make history here,” Adam said with a growing smile. He stepped beside Doctor Swan and looked at her. “After we run this test today we’ll finally be able to go home.”

“Don’t put the wagon before the horse,” she chided. “There is a lot to go wrong here.

“We have some of the best minds from around the world. We’ll be alright,” he reassured.

She waved a dismissive hand at Adam and instead turned her attention back to the numbers. They would never lie to her.

The testing room was cleared and sanitized as the Scion team retreated to the safety of their lead-lined barricades. All eyes were on the shiny red apple that sat upon a chrome-plated pedestal. Emotions were tense as the facilities generators hummed with greater intensity. Slowly a purple liquid filled a spiral tube that dangled over the apple.

With a nod of affirmation given by all members, the button was pressed. The room was filled with a brilliant light that blinded everyone. Screams quickly ensured as a wave of panic set in. Doctor Swan desperately swatted about for the kill switch. Thankfully part of the system malfunctioned and had shut itself down. The generators slowly winded down as the survivor’s sight returned.

Blood and gore coated the walls and floor of the testing room. Doctor Swan stared at the mutilated leg of one of her coworkers that had landed beside her. Unable to fight the urge she vomited the contents of her stomach onto the floor. Her gaze slowly took in the gruesome sight of her massacred team.

Then her eyes landed on the apple. The accursed apple that sat, almost mockingly, on the second pedestal. Indeed, it had moved from one pedestal to another as their experiment intended, but it bore a new marking upon its sleek surface.

A large toothy bite had been taken out of the side of the apple.

Doctor Swan stared at Adam’s lifeless body as her mind began to race. What the hell came through their machine that ate the apple and so quickly murdered her team?

Inspired by Zane Dickens’💯 Story Challenge. I’ve made it over halfway now! Hopefully, I can make it to the end of this challenge.
