Day 1 Results/Photos From the Great Backyard Bird Count Day 1-Dan’s Almost Daily Journal

Volume 55-Tag Along With Me on My Sometimes Boring Sometimes Interesting Sometimes Humorous Journey Through Life

House Finch/Author Photo

Welcome back. Day 1 is in the books. Yes, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is underway. I hope you will decide to participate in this valuable citizen science project.

I recently wrote an article regarding the GBBC and how to participate:

Day 1 Results:

The weather for the first day of the count was a little bizarre, but then again this winter has been anything but normal. This morning it was 55 degrees and raining. It rapidly cooled off during the day with a dusting of snow; tonight the temperature is in the teens with wind chills in the single digits. Overall, today was a great bird-watching day with many species showing up at my feeders.

Following is a list of the species I observed today:

  • Red-Winged Blackbird
  • House Finch
  • European Starling
  • Mourning Dove
  • American Tree Sparrow
  • Northern Cardinal
  • Blue Jay
  • White-Throated Sparrow
  • Black-Capped Chickadee
  • Common Grackle
  • House Sparrow
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Pigeon
  • Tufted Titmouse
  • American Goldfinch
  • Brown-Headed Cowbird
  • Dark-Eyed Junco

Of interest were the red-winged blackbirds and common Grackles. For here in central NY, this is very early for these species to return. However, the temperatures over the last week were way above normal.

Stay tuned for more updates as the weekend progresses. Happy bird watching.
