Dating the Shopping Queen
Can we afford that?
You might be dating a partner that you love and care about, but you might have noticed when the two of you moved in together that your partner likes to spend money. Though your partner might save you money once in while due to their couponing habits and ability to find the best sales, you might still be struggling with the total money that he or she spends. You might be on a budget, and you might be having issues meeting your necessities due to the excessive spending. So, what do you do if your partner likes to spend a lot of the money that you two save? How do you approach this type of situation? Though the answers to these questions can be different for everyone, here are a few suggestions.
1. Tell your partner how you feel.
Let your partner know how you feel about the amount of money that is being spent. Listen to your partner when he or she tells you how he or she feels about the situation, and do your best to compromise on a solution.
2. Set a shopping budget.
Talk with your partner and see how much money the two of you can set aside for shopping trips. Try to put the shopping money in a separate account so it doesn’t get mixed up with the money that the two of you saved to pay bills.
3. Start shopping online instead of in the store.
Try to get your necessities online instead of inside of the store so that you and your partner will be less tempted by impulse racks and things that you see in the store that you weren’t originally going to buy. Try to make a list ahead of time, and do your best to make sure that both of you stick to the list instead of ordering extra items.
4. Think about what you really need.
Sit down with your partner and make a list of wants and needs. Then talk to him or her about these items. This might bring more perspective to the shopping habits that are currently impacting your budget and help the two of you think about how to limit buying items that you don’t really need when you aren’t in the position to do so.
If you are dating a partner that loves to shop and it is impacting your budget, then sit down and talk to him or her. Do your best to compromise on a way to cut back and try to separate your needs from your wants.
