Dark December
Even December isn’t immune from darkness
For a good number of folks
This December
was one to remember
Filled with smiley faces
in various places
Christmas lights sing all over the world
Trying to fill a void
That needs lots of laughter and love
From below to above
Sadly, for others
this love never found them
in a situation that was beyond dim
Like a father and his six-year-old daughter
The brutal cold would claim their light
Preventing them from remaining in the fight
of life
For them, this Dark December
was not one to remember
Their sad ending is a lesson
that even Decemeber has a dark side
that’s difficult to hide
from a world desperately trying to escape the blues
but it’s hard when the blues dominate the news
The sad New York Post article about the deaths of a 42-year-old South Carolina father and his 6-year-old daughter a couple of days ago — inspired this poem. Usually, I avoid most news, but the title of this story compelled me to read it. I regret doing that.
Seeing a photo of them together made it even harder to take the tragic news.
It’s a shame. RIP.
