Dark City — Alex Proyas
An intellectually interesting science fiction thriller

Quick Summary
Waking up with no memory in an impersonal hotel room, John Murdoch soon discovers that he is wanted for a series of sadistic murders. Hunted by Inspector Bumstead, he seeks to regain his memory and thus understand who he is. He enters a mysterious labyrinth where he encounters creatures with frightening powers. Thanks to Dr. Schreber, Murdoch manages to remember some details of his troubled past.
My Thoughts
This movie reminded me of a certain Matrix. Besides, it was released just one year before, and yet it is much less known, I don’t really understand why.
Indeed, this movie was good, interesting intellectually speaking, even if not necessarily fun to watch. The atmosphere that emanates from it is of a darkness that goes well with its name “Dark City”. In fact, one has the impression of being stuck in a never-ending nightmare. The atmosphere aspect is thus perfectly succeeded by the director Alex Proyas.
On the other hand, the emotional aspect is missing. In Matrix, we get attached to Neo and we want to see him succeed in his mission. In Dark City, we don’t care to see John Murdoch succeed in his mission. We are in fact observers, and not really involved in the film for this character.
Otherwise everything else is successful. The casting is good, the movie is not too long, the story is interesting, with multiple twists and turns, the images are beautiful and the music goes well with it, etc… I just saw this movie, and it has not aged badly, the special effects are still good.
To Watch or Not to Watch?
Dark City is an intellectually interesting science fiction thriller that is easy to watch. I recommend it to those who like this genre.
