Dark Chocolate is a Gateway Drug
Those dark chocolate indulgences are just the beginning of a lurking addiction. Step away from that 88% cacao bar if you want to preserve your future.
It always starts innocently enough. The Nestle morsels in the Mason jar on the shelf in the pantry seem worthy of a little nibble. I have a coupon for a Lilly’s chocolate bar, gourmet and dark, what harm could it do? It always ends the same, and chocolate creeps back into my addictive food repertoire, euphoria without the ugly track marks.
What is the harm in a little indulgence now and then you may ask. What could the risk be from a little of chocolate to make these times a bit sweeter, this reality we are locked in a bit more tolerable? Chocolate, you say, is what makes life worth it.
Well, heroin does that for some people too, but you don’t go promoting that everyday.
For some, chocolate addiction is as sneaky as vodka is for the struggling alcoholic. Like weed to the addict, 80% cacao bars can be a gateway to that other life of sitting on the bathroom floor, back against the tub, a HoHo in one hand and a Snickers bar in the other.
Stop while you still can, put down that Whoopie Pie.
Yet for some, a “square” of dark chocolate is as innocent as a single glass of wine with a prime rib dinner. There is more to worry about in the carbs in the mashed potatoes than the possibility of ending up sitting on the curb with a bottle of Mad Dog in a paper bag between your knees.
To some of us that “square” is as lethal as a snort of coke to John DeLorean. Our lives are forever changed by succumbing to its sweetness.
Oh, and for those of you who are too young to know about DeLorean, ask your parents. But I digress. Back to my drug of choice.
Chocolate. It can’t hurt me, right? Eating an entire box of Ring Dings or Funny Bones on a Saturday afternoon while binge watching The British Baking Show, is not a sign of addiction.
Duncan Hines Fudge frosting directly out of the can, now that’s a problem.
Savoring a slice of chocolate decadence at your favorite bistro (oh yeah getting it for take out, make that two slices please,) with an espresso or latte, as healthy as a walk on a cool autumn day.
Eating all of your children’s Halloween candy while sitting in the back of their closet where they have hidden it from you, that might deserve some professional attention.
Researchers tell us that the part of the brain that “lights up” when given chocolate, is the same area that ignites with all addictions.
So why is there not a 12 step group for chocoholics? Why are those addicted to this indulgence the butt of so many jokes when obesity is the greatest killer of all time?
Is there a SMART recovery program for chocolate addicts, a clinic we can get a dose of carob at each morning to keep our cravings at bay?
