Summary

The web content discusses the salary range for Data Engineers in Germany and the United States, emphasizing the higher salaries in the U.S. and the potential for salary growth in Europe as companies become more data-driven.

Abstract

Data Engineers play a crucial role in preparing data for analysis, yet their compensation varies significantly by region. In Germany, a Data Engineer typically earns around 59,300€ (approximately 68,000), which is considered high, reflecting the nascent stage of data-driven practices in German and other European companies. The article suggests that as these companies mature in their data capabilities, Data Engineer salaries are likely to increase. In contrast, Data Engineers in the U.S. command a much higher salary, ranging from 110,000 to $155,000, with senior positions offering even more. The author posits that European Data Engineers, particularly those with a generalist education and additional responsibilities, can negotiate higher salaries. The article concludes by urging European companies to recognize the value of data expertise, which could lead to improved market conditions for Data Engineers in Europe, aligning more closely with their American counterparts.

Opinions

  • The author believes that Data Engineers in Germany are well-compensated, especially considering the current stage of data-driven practices in European companies.
  • There is an expectation that salaries for Data Engineers in Europe will rise as companies increasingly adopt data-driven strategies.
  • The author suggests that European Data Engineers with a broad skill set and those who take on roles such as product owners or platform architects can secure higher salaries.
  • The article implies that European companies may be lagging behind in recognizing the full value of Data Engineers compared to American companies, which offer significantly higher salaries.
  • The author hints at emigration as a potential solution for European Data Engineers seeking higher pay, but also advocates for European companies to improve the market for Data Engineers within Europe.

Even though Data Scientists are currently in great demand and many have this career aspiration, it is the Data Engineer who make the data available for analysis purposes in the first place. But are they paid fairly?

How to become a Data Engineer

In the meantime, there are many courses with which you can become a Data Engineer. Professionals from the fields of Informatics, Computer Technology or Statistics can work as Data Engineers. For an optimal start, there are further training courses that prepare students for the fields of Business Intelligence, Databases, ETL or Data Science, among others. The study program Data Engineer is still a rarity, but this is not surprising, because as a Data Engineer you usually take over other tasks from the field of Data Analytics, IT Architecture and others. A generalist education is therefore helpful here.

How much does a Data Engineer earn?

Well it depends…. In Germany for example you will get about 59.300€ round about 68.000$ [1]. From my own experience, I know that this is quite a lot in Germany. This is due to the perception that companies in Germany, but also in other European countries, are often not yet so data driven or are just on the way to becoming so. In the future, salary increases can be expected here. What also helps is a generalist education and a corresponding position. In this country, Data Engineers can often negotiate a higher salary, for example, if they work as a product owner in the area or take on more responsibility by becoming the architect not only of data pipelines but of an entire platform.

Nonetheless, Europeans will probably look enviously across the pond, because significantly higher salaries are paid here. In the US a Data Engineer can earn from $110,000 to $155,000, senior Data Engineers even more.

Summary

As a Data Engineer, you don’t earn badly, but North Americans are paid much better. Is emigration the only solution? I think that if you as a European are working in a generalistic position, you can make a difference here, and European companies should slowly become aware of the topic of data, which should improve the market for Data Engineers also. Here, as in other areas, such as cloud computing, Europeans simply need to catch up, which should also be an explanation for the different salaries.
