What is this insect? Never seen before. This and all other photographs by author Luciano Abriata.

Curious insects in the heights

Closing the stories of a recent hike in my favorite corner of the Swiss Alps.

This last weekend I went hiking and showed you one of the several nasty ticks I found:

But the weekend before that, I spend the whole Saturday and Sunday in an altitude lake of the Taney region, in the neighboring Swiss canton called Valais, right close to the frontier with France. A stunning region that is not especially protected but could well stand as a small national park, because of all the life it hosts and its pristine forests:

One of the highlights of my weekend in Taney, and a very successful story by the way, was the multitude of wildflowers that grow in the region, especially in the higher parts:

But it turns out not only flowers and ibex were interesting. I also came across many butterflies and other bugs… here are the 3 most interesting ones.

Monarch? butterflies

On flowers:

On my helmet:

And, yes, on animal poop too!

Beetles

And this, what is it?

If you know that this is, please let me know in the comments!
