Prompt #8: Pride At Any Age
As older people, we’ve witnessed and/or participated in the great strides the LGBTQ+ community has made since the first Pride Parade in 1970. In a lot of places, people can now marry whomever they choose, live in a community of acceptance, and feel safe enough to explore who they are and how they want to represent themselves to the world.
That wasn’t always the case, and in some places, it still isn’t. With that in mind:
Did your sexual or gender identity change throughout your life? If so, did you come out early or later in life? Did you have to search for a welcoming community or was one already available to you? Have you been an ally to the LGBTQ+ community? If so, how has that experience shaped your worldview? There are a lot more labels now to help people define themselves, have you found them to be helpful to you? How?
