Abstract

The poem "Crossing Borders" by Kimberly Hampton Nilsson, featured in Poemorama at Paper Poetry, delves into the poet's experience of venturing into the unknown. It captures the essence of exploration and the ensuing sensory overload that comes with it. The poem describes the chaotic nature of new experiences that defy explanation, where imagination fills the gaps left by inadequate words. It speaks to the transformative power of these experiences, which slow down time and allow for introspection, leading to a shedding of falsehoods and a reconnection with nature. The poem concludes with a reflection on the abandonment of self-comparison and the embrace of love and the present moment, signified by the fading of the poet's former self. The work is part of Paper Poetry's poetry prompt series for National Poetry Month and includes a copyright notice and a thank you to the readers and contributors.

Crossing Borders

A free verse

Created on Sketch app by the author from a photo taken in Uganda.

Sometimes I dare crossing borders Never knowing just what I’ll find Often sights of wow and wonder Stretching crannies of my mind.

Everything chaotic Nothing matches Flickering glances Unaware, without discern.

Refreshing to discover When words won’t mix Imagination elaborates Smiling creates a fix.

Time slows, freeing up the past Steady, silent heartbeats Final sighs, dissolve falseness Nature carries out its song

Relentless comparing, forgotten Sunsets for the loving Lost and nowhere to be found The “I,” -I used to be.
