Creative Writing is Like Going to an Amazing Buffet

Give the reader high-quality content and in just the right amount

Have you ever been to a food buffet? Usually, the choices are fantastic if you go to a good location. It can be challenging to decide which selection of the foods you want.

Well, creative writing is a very similar situation. There are so many choices for writing topics. It can be challenging to know where to begin and which information will create the desired result.

It is also challenging when going to a food buffet, not to overeat. Everything looks good and tastes good. It is not until after you leave the buffet that you often discover you ate too much. Then it takes time to digest all of the food you consumed.

Again, a buffet is very similar to creative writing. You want to add a lot of extra data to convince the reader that you know what you are talking about in your are writing. In doing so, it can over-deliver but not in a good way. You reader can go away from your material feeling much like they do when they overeat the food at the buffet.

After you have written your material, set it aside for a short time, and then come back and re-read your information. Begin to feel like it’s too much information. You can start to edit your work. Give the reader high-quality content and just the right amount for them to grasp the ideas you are sharing with them.

Sometimes we need help in editing because it often is hard to determine how much content is just the right amount. I had experienced this when I wrote what I thought was a concise, clear explanation of a topic and did it in nine chapters.

I asked someone else to read it for me, who had many published books. When she returned to me, I was shocked to hear her say that I had so over-delivered the material that I could take each of the nine chapters and create a separate book out of it. I had no idea that I had nine books in what I thought was one.

Get fresh eyes on your writing by setting it aside for a short time and then returning to re-read your content. Another way is to have someone who has the skill to edit who can look at your work objectively. An editor can make the appropriate cuts. The editor can request the corrected additions of content to make your work readable, enjoyable. Your readers will want to return to your writing and come back to you for more.
