Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Your alarm is going off and you can’t quite reach it. You have three options: Hit snooze and go back to sleep, turn it off and go back to sleep, or turn it off and get up to start your day. I personally never hit snooze because I dislike being woken up over and over again.

However, the other two options, I have decided both ways many times. Some mornings it is easier to turn off my alarm and go back to sleep only to wake up in a panic because I will be late for work.

Other mornings, the most successful mornings, the ones where I am winning at life are different. I get up and start my morning routine. In fact, since I started a morning routine, I have seen significant strides toward being productive and feeling good about my day.

Two Types of Morning Routines

Did you catch what my subtitle says? I have morning routines. Plural. I break them out into two different categories. My first one is at home. My second one is when I start work. Each one has essential aspects to starting my day. Here are what they look like:

Mornings at Home

  1. Start Coffee
  2. Write
  3. Read Bible
  4. Wake Up with Daughters
  5. Get Us Breakfast
  6. Empty Dishwasher
  7. Prep Everything for Work
  8. Wake Wife Up with Coffee
  9. Shower and Get Ready for Work
  10. Out the Door

These are the first ten things I do almost every day. Accept on the days when I turn my alarm off and then go back to sleep. If I do all of these things every morning before I go to work, I have set my house up for the win. I have accomplished a lot before starting work. Which gives me momentum for the day.

Mornings at Work

  1. Boot Up Computer, Grab Mail, Start Up Applications
  2. Fill Out My Priorities Sheet
  3. Start Priorities Sheet: Morning Routine Items
  4. Take a Walk, Grab Water, and Use the Bathroom
  5. Start Rest of Day

Work is a shorter list. It also has specific tasks related to work. And it focuses on my priorities first. The key at work is about setting the day up to run efficiently. For work, my Priorities Sheet determines if my day is going to be a good day, so it is first on my list of actionable items. Then everything falls into place after.

Routines Help You Win

I used to think my ability to adapt to any situation was good enough to do everything in life. What I learned after implementing a few routines is how much more effective and productive I can be with a structure.

At home, I set the tone for my family with my morning routine. With work, I prepare myself to do the important things for my day. And if I don’t get through my work, I still feel accomplished by setting the routine that helps me focus on what is important.
