Crafting Engaging Fantasy Fiction: A Formula for Beginners Like Me
I have been learning small things daily about writing a fantasy novel, so let’s embark on a exciting adventure into the world of fantasy writing, and allow our imagination to have no limits! If like me, you’re eager to craft fantastical tales, then together, let’s explore the basics of plot, character development, action and reaction techniques to bring our stories to life.
We should meet our hero just before or as they’re diving into their adventure. In this adventure, they should face challenges that allows them to learn and grow along the way.
Their journey should take them through a magical world or the real world.
If it’s a magical world it should have unique cultures and histories that captivates your readers.
The real world already has these rich histories and cultures to draw from.
Design enchanting settings with magical elements and take your readers on a journey to discover your fantastical world. Do this gradually though because if you do this well your readers won’t want to be rushed.
Keep your readers hooked with high-stakes conflicts. Whether it’s a battle between good and evil or personal struggles, build tension leading to a satisfying resolution.
Make your hero someone readers can connect with, even in a fantastical setting. Explore their goals, fears, and growth throughout the story.
Do the same with the antagonist. The more like the protagonist you can make them the better.
Populate your world with diverse and memorable characters who play important roles in the hero’s journey.
Craft villains with motives that go beyond being just ‘bad.’ Give your story depth by creating complex antagonists who challenge the hero.
To keep our readers engaged we must alternate effectively between exciting action and quieter moments to allow for reflection.
We also need to paint a vivid picture with our words. Instead of telling facts, we must show our readers the sights, sounds, and emotions using descriptive language.
If magic is part of your story, establish rules and consequences. This adds realism and keeps magic from becoming too convenient.
Ultimately, creating our fantasy worlds should be an exciting journey of creativity and imagination. We should embrace the hero’s journey, build immersive worlds, create relatable characters, and master pacing and descriptive techniques to weave magical tales that will captivate our readers.
This is still a learning curve for me, but I’m hoping that in time, all these small things I’ve learned about so far will add up into a successful novel.
