Covid-19, What No One’s Talking About
Vaginal yeast infection, Thrush, aka Vulvovaginal candidiasis

First of all, I am grateful that I didn’t contract Covid until this summer. Had I been infected early in this pandemic, I would most likely be dead. I’m 65 and I’ve got way too many comorbidities.
I was put on the antiviral cocktail and, oh joy, was one of the six percent who got something called Paxlovid Mouth. A horrific taste in the mouth -- think of the most foul thing you’ve ever tasted or smelled then double it. Sadly, the only Covid symptom I didn’t get was loss of taste and smell.
My Covid ordeal lasted a full 14 days. I still have a lingering cough. I also get weird symptoms reminiscent of menopause-night sweats, irritability, etc. Then came, horrible itching, you know, down there.
I’m a throwback to a generation that is uncomfortable talking about anything vaginal. I even refused to go see the Vagina Monologues because of the name. Puritanical? Guilty! My ancestors were stanuch Mennonites.
I am embarrassed to call the doctor who might ask questions I don’t want to answer. The conversation I imagine goes like this (based on previous embarrassing conversations with actual doctors, not just the ones in my head).
Doc: Have you had intercourse recently? Me: No. Doc: No? (raised eyebrows of disbelief) Me. no.
Doc: Do you masterbate frequently? Me: Gulp. Your point?
Doc: You have Honeymoon Cystitis -- too much sex or masterbation in a short amount of time. Me: Well, I have no love life. I was too sick to do anything. Now, I’m just too tired. Try again, Doc.
I decided to visit Doc Google for a second opinion
I ask Doc Google, is there a connection between Covid infection and Vaginial Yeast Infection or Thrush aka vulvovaginal candidiasis?
Doc Google replies, Yes! The CDC has a whole page on the different fungal infections you can get as a result of having had Covid. I don’t recall hearing anything about Covid leading to fungal infections on the news, or in general conversation.
COVID-19-associated fungal infections can lead to severe illness and death.1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 28, 29, 30 Symptoms of certain fungal diseases can be similar to those of COVID-19, including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.1, 31 Some patients can have COVID-19 and a fungal infection at the same time. Laboratory testing is necessary to determine if a person has a fungal infection, COVID-19, or both.

I wish I had heard of this sooner. I could have spent the last two weeks in treatment rather than itchy humiliation. So I guess I’m calling the actual doctor next. I am less embarrassed to say Covid compromised my immune system and caused a really annoying yeast infection — you know, down there.
