COVID-19: The Fall Of Donald Trump

I assess the damage done to the Trump administration by COVID-19.

The economy is in deep trouble. The pandemic has continued, unabated, to spread throughout the world. The United States has utterly failed to contain the virus, and as a result, the half-measures that have been attempted in various states to revive economic function have not met with success. Jobs are few and far between, many Americans are being kicked off of unemployment prematurely, and winter is coming — perhaps promising the deadliest flu season in history. Hospitals in the United States routinely max out their capacity during flu seasons which do not also contain a deadly pandemic. As hospitals reach capacity, the number of people infected with COVID-19 who go without life saving care will skyrocket, and so will the number who die.

Since becoming infected with COVID-19 himself last week, Donald Trump’s already-unpredictable behavior has grown even more erratic. Tuesday, he killed stimulus talks he had endorsed on Saturday, then appeared to revive them when his tweet storm resulted in a crash in the stock market.

Today, following a vice presidential debate in which searing indictments from the lips of Senator Kamala Harris went unanswered by Vice President Pence, who spent over two minutes with a fly on his head, Trump has waffled regarding his appearance in the second debate.

Source: Unknown

After returning to work despite his COVID-19 infection and exposing an untold number of federal employees to the deadly disease, Trump has continually downplayed the deaths of over 210,000 American citizens and attempted to take credit for the rapid pace of vaccine development.

It is not yet known whether the president has fully recovered from COVID-19 or not, but Herman Cain also felt much better after his initial bout with the virus, only to relapse and later pass away.

How We Got Here

The path from the initial spread of the SARS-CoV-2 to our current position as world leader in COVID-19 deaths, led by our madman of an infected president, is one with an absurd number of visible missteps. Let’s look back at some of the most egregious mistakes along the way.

1. April, 2018: Donald Trump dismissed the Pandemic Response Team

Whether it was because he wanted to save money or because the Obama administration supported pandemic awareness and prevention efforts in response to the 2009 Swine Flu pandemic and he wanted to undo whatever Obama did out of disrespect and immaturity, Trump paved the way for the present catastrophe and his own undoing when he disbanded, one by one, each institution that could have dealt with this problem.

2. January, 2020: Donald Trump Was Briefed On COVID-19 — And Did Nothing

Not only did Trump fail to orchestrate an international response to SARS-CoV-2, but he drastically underestimated the potential danger, despite having had it explained to him twice. In the recent debate against Senator Kamala Harris, Vice President Pence claimed that the administration did not want to panic the American people. This is reasonable, but the Trump administration’s plan to contain the virus failed miserably, if it even existed at all.

Jared Kushner reportedly ordered a large number of testing kits and failed to store them in a refrigerator, resulting in a total loss which virtually ended the real effort to do the requisite amount of testing to stop the spread of the disease. Trump swept the failure under the rug and pretended he just didn’t want to test anymore to cover up his son-in-law’s failure, then simply adopted the line and never made another effort to scale testing to appropriate levels.

3. March, 2020: A Flippant President Trump Brags About Substandard Testing And Endorses A Pillow Company Instead Of Dealing With The Virus

You just have to read the transcript in the link (from whitehouse.gov) to get the full sense of how inadequate the president’s grasp of what is about to happen really is. He’s about to lose a quarter of a million Americans by being a careless dumbass and he stands up there and jokes about his hair needing to be his, then flippantly invites a man to the stage to talk about his pillow company.

The problem with paying attention to what Trump says at all is that, if you started to believe him last March, you wouldn’t have any grasp of what was about to happen to you.

Trump knew. He just didn’t care.

4. August, 2020: Jonathan Swan Interviews An Unhinged Trump

Trump appeared in a demented interview with Jonathan Swan the week after the Republican Convention. After downplaying the COVID-19 pandemic with an alternating chorus of “it can’t happen here” and “it’s no worse than the flu” and assorted similar lies, Trump is seeing the American people die in record numbers and knows that this is his fault. Still, determined to maintain power at any cost, the narcissist bleats on — but it sounds like he doesn’t even believe himself, anymore, by this point.

5. October, 2020: Trump Is Diagnosed With COVID-19

Almost poetically, news that Trump was sick with COVID-19 broke a few days after he lost his mind at a debate against presidential rival Joe Biden. Near the end of the debate, Trump was so overcome with emotion and the desire to defend himself that he broke into a long-winded ramble which was almost completely incoherent. Chris Christie also tested positive for COVID-19 after reportedly advising the president to interrupt as often as possible to capitalize upon his opponent’s stutter. Dozens of others have been infected, including Kellyanne Conway.

What Comes Next

It’s very difficult to make any sort of accurate prediction this year. Trump’s possibilities seem extremely limited at this point, however.

  • The 25th Amendment is invoked
  • Trump dies of COVID-19
  • Biden wins the Oval Office in a landslide

Unfortunately for the president, his refusal to deal with the coronavirus according to the well-established precedent developed by representatives of the American people has, in fact, cost him everything. He has become infuriated by the process of coming to grips with the fact that he cannot bully nature the way he bullies people, and he could finally lose the last remaining vestiges of his grip upon sanity as a result.

Millions of Americans who voted for Trump in 2016 will stay home or vote for his opponent in 2020, even if he makes it to the election. It is still possible that he could die of his COVID-19 infection, or perhaps more likely, be removed from office under the 25th Amendment due to unfitness for duty.

The Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett hangs in the balance as the mad president retains office for the moment.

News of death or disability due to COVID-19 seems almost inevitable, but Trump is the last person alive who would admit it. Assuming that he does manage to shake the disease and remain in office until the election, Joe Biden is likely to deliver a wallop at the polls from which Trump — fascist fantasies and all — will never recover.

Update:

Just after I finished the writing of this article, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has opened the door to 25th amendment talks.
