Covfefe Me Once Shame On You, But To Do It Twice?

The 2020 US elections through Twitter

Photo by Charles Deluvio on Unsplash

It’s the morning of election day, Nov 3rd, 2020, and like some of you, I feel blessed to be Canadian. Still, the potential of Trump being elected for a second term covfefes me, even from across the border.

Trump was a sore winner when he won his election in 2016. His victory speech was filled with, “I told you so,” and “lock her up.” I can't imagine what a sore loser he would be if he lost this one. At least he’s given us a heads up that he won’t be going away quietly, prompting businesses to take precautions by boarding up their storefronts.

I am covfefed for words.

It feels like I’ve paid more than $750 in taxes myself, and I am not even American. The front page of every publication looks like an ad for the Game of Thrones finale, but the real juice is on Twitter.

What The Trending Topics On Twitter Tell Us:

  1. Trump may go, but what happens to the bigots he’s left behind?

Last night, #Bixesuals and #homosexuals were trending via Twitter in Canada; and the tweets were hilarious. It started from a meme asking people, “What is your conservative fear-mongering slogan?”

“If Joe Biden wins, bisexuals will take away your 401k”- random tweet.

I was laughing hard until I realized many people didn't get the joke and were re-tweeting these statements as facts, “If Joe Biden wins, homosexuals will sexualize Christopher Columbus.”

These people aren't going away in a day.

2. Maybe Cancel Culture Works?

A study done by The New York Times reveals that the most common names that voted for Trump were: Richard, Thomas, William, and Nancy. People started calling it the #Karen redemption graph.

Turns out, most Karens are voting for Biden in this election.

3. People are looking to the US to restore hope

#DearAmerica is trending on Twitter with tweets from around the world, begging the US to get this election right. They range from simple words of encouragement like “Get your shit together, America” to more sinister ones.

“We voted our Trumpist government in for a second time, and our country is facing the worst civil unrest in decades,”— your friends from Poland.

“The US right now looks awfully familiar to 1939 Germany,“— Germany.

“Please don't send us your democracy,” — Iran.

The world is invested in this particular election because a ripple effect of hate, fear-mongering, and divisiveness has spread globally. Have you noticed the number of countries protesting their governments at the same time?

I guess people are looking to the US to restore hope; if you cant be free in the free world, where does that leave us as humans?

Good luck America, we can't wait to put all this covfefe behind us either.

Your neighbor.
