Courage Is Real

Courage is one of the most significant traits of a human being. Before you start, let me acknowledge that Character and Integrity are also just as important.

Courage can be easily developed if we don’t allow FEAR (false evidence appearing real) to get in our way. Let’s look at just a few instances where real courage is required:

  • Tell someone you love them
  • Tell someone you no longer want them in your life
  • To accept responsibility or be accountable
  • To do something no one else wants to do
  • To accept that you can be a better version of yourself than you are
  • To help someone when they are down
  • To give yourself permission to step outside what you would normally do
  • To accept a growth challenge

FEAR of rejection, not measuring up (to something), being told no, danger, being in over your head, quitting part way through, and or absolute failure are all reasons why we elect not to do something. You have the power to give yourself permission to change that.

We can all be courageous by first giving ourselves permission “to do what it takes.”

A personal example is when my wife met me at the door to our home and said, “Congratulations, you’re going to be the Father of five children.” It took me about a minute to respond when I told her, “Hold that thought, I’ll be right back.”

I walked around the neighborhood trying to muster the inevitable courage I would need to face her and my existing children and prepare for a new baby boy (I knew it would be a boy). All of my children came in order, boy, girl, boy, girl, etc.) I don’t know how long it took, but I returned home, and the first word out of my mouth was “Great.” Then I said, “That will give us three boys. I’m truly blessed.”

Author’s photo of Cameron Rawson (44), the 5th child. It was taken at our family reunion this summer.

Cameron is the Father of two, a manager in the oil field business, a scratch golfer, a great dart thrower, (soon) a pilot, and a professional woodworker.

Look what I would have missed.

There are so many times in my life when against all odds, I mustered the courage to proceed. So many people have benefited from the decision to press forward based on my courage and conviction.

Try to remember what it felt like to be courageous in your own story.

Thank you for the inspiration and challenge.
