Welcome to day one of 28 days of gratitude magic! If you’d like some more context about this almost one-month adventure, you can read it here.

Have you been guilty of chronic complaining? Either about a person, your job, the political system (ahem, yes), that you don’t have enough money for something? It’s so easy to focus on the negative. I’ve spent a lot of time in that space.

How much time do you focus on all the good in your life?

It’s easy to get sucked into negativity when things are at their lowest in our lives. Particularly if we’re undergoing very difficult hardships with our health, finances, or family. Especially when we’re having a rough day.

Focusing on the positive things in our life doesn’t mean we have to walk around smiling, pretending that things aren’t tough. It just means being aware that while there are challenging times, we remain continually aware of the abundance that is in our life.

There are so many things to be grateful for, no matter how small they are.

Just the fact that you’re reading this means — you have eyes, you can read, you have the time to read this, and you have a device that allows you to access this story. How many blessings can you count there?

The multiplying power of what we focus on

The author of The Magic, says that whatever good we focus on, will increase. I have to agree that this has already happened in my life.

I always focus on the amazing people I attract in my life, and the quality of my friendships. I keep attracting good people. I have even attracted the most incredible reader-writer community on Medium — people I call mentors, and some — even friends, that I hope to one day know better.

Similarly, I’ve carried around a crappy money story for years that I’m learning to let go of. It goes something like this: ‘People with money are a-holes, nothing good comes with being rich, I never have enough money, etc.’ Now that I know about the laws of attraction and that money is just energy, I’m rewriting this story (more on that later).

Exercise 1 — Count your blessings

First thing in the morning, write out ten blessings by hand — in a special book or journal, on your computer, or here, on Medium!

You need to think about WHY you’re grateful for this person, thing, or experience. This increases the feeling of gratitude so that it doesn’t become mechanical.

If you’re struggling some days, Rhonda Byrne, the author of the book provides us with these prompts:

  • I’m truly blessed to have (what) because (why)
  • I’m so happy and grateful for (what) because (why)
  • I’m truly grateful for (what) because (why) with all my heart
  • Thank you for (what) because (why)

After you’re finished making your list of blessings, go over them again either in your mind or read them out loud.

At the end of each blessing, you stop and say the magic words:

Thank you

Thank you

Thank you

To help you feel more gratitude, you can be grateful to any concept you are drawn to (your higher power, your mother, the Universe, God).

Here is one of my blessings today:

Thank you Divine Creator for the ability to read, write and express myself through words, because here I share my experience and the experiences of others, and together we connect and grow through the power and beauty of words.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Be aware of the abundance

When we count negative things, we hide the positive things. They get buried under the impression that we lack something, that we are not enough, that someone else has taken our power, and that we are missing what we need to find fulfillment.

Abundance is all around us, we just need to have a mindset and a habit to continually recognize it. When we focus on it and really feel what it means to be grateful, we give power to the good in our lives.

So go on — actually sit in that deep space of gratitude. The more grateful you feel, the lighter and happier you become, and you become a magnet for more of the good you desire.
