Summary

The author, Justiss Goode, is exploring alternative ways to monetize stories that have garnered significant external views but do not directly generate revenue on Medium, considering the possibility of republishing them on a different platform like Marker.

Abstract

Justiss Goode, a prolific writer on Medium, is strategizing on how to capitalize on the popularity of stories that have received a large number of external views but yield no earnings from non-Medium members. After discovering that a website, Marker, only accepts original content for monetization, Goode suggests selectively removing certain stories from Medium to repurpose them as original content for Marker. This decision is based on the analysis of story performance, particularly those with high external traffic but low internal engagement, such as a story on smoothie recipes that has 96% external viewership. Goode advises other writers to carefully assess their own situations, read the fine print, and decide whether to remain exclusive to Medium, diversify their writing portfolio, or explore new opportunities with platforms like Marker.

Opinions

  • The author believes that there is untapped potential in stories that have received a lot of external views and that these could be monetized elsewhere.
  • Goode emphasizes the importance of promoting already written stories rather than constantly creating new content.
  • There is a sense of frustration that stories with high external viewership do not translate into earnings on Medium.
  • The author is optimistic about the possibility of earning money from previously published stories by republishing them as original content on a different platform.
  • Goode suggests that writers should consider removing stories from Medium that are popular outside the platform and republishing them where they can earn money.
  • The author encourages writers to make informed decisions about their work, considering both the potential benefits and drawbacks of diversifying their publishing platforms.
  • Goode is prepared to experiment with this new strategy by initially removing a few stories from Medium to test the waters on Marker.

ANOTHER ONLINE EARNING RESOURCE

Anyone who knows the kind of writer I am, knows that my mind is constantly thinking of ways to elevate my hundreds of stories.

While other writers are busy spending lots of time thinking up new stories to write and publish, I’m usually looking for ways to promote the stories I’ve already written.

Call me vain, but I believe there are just too many gems that are yet to be discovered among the hundreds of stories I’ve previously written.

I want people to read what I write, if not here on Medium, then some damn where!

That’s why I love the fact that some of my stories have received thousands of external views, even though we don’t earn a cent from readers who are non-Medium members.

Well low and behold, I may have found a way to earn money from stories that appear to be popular with those who aren’t necessarily Medium members.

Keep reading and see what you think…

Good news, bad news, good news again

Lately, I’ve been sharing some news about a cool online earning resource; a website where writers can earn money by selling their stories.

I’ve provided brief updates, as I discover them, and I’ve been completely transparent about things.

So far, I shared what I thought to be good news about the website — believing that previously published content was allowed.

Then I discovered the bad news that all content being submitted for sale, must be “original” content. I broke all the gory details down in the story titled:

But not to worry folks, because I had a brainstorm of an idea, and I think it amounts to good news again!

Should your stories continue capturing external views?

In order to see the potential for some of your popular stories to earn more money, writers on Medium need to ask themselves a question.

How long should you allow those popular stories to continue capturing external views that don’t pay?

If you’ve been paying close attention to your stats, and you see positive results that lead to an increase in your earnings, and it somehow results from external views, then BRAVO.

By all means; don’t even think about removing any of those stories that you are clearly benefiting from in some way or fashion. In fact, don’t give it another thought.

But…

If you believe you have stories that have demonstrated a degree of popularity, outside of Medium, then you might want to consider what I’m about to suggest.

That’s right! It might be time to remove those type of stories from Medium and publish them somewhere you can actually get paid for them.

Test the waters with one or two stories

My mind instantly began to race, the moment I realized I wouldn’t be able to upload previously published stories to Marker, while allowing them to remain posted on Medium.

That put a serious damper in the plans I initially had, however, after giving it some thought, that’s when I got the idea to use stories that have earned me lots of external views.

I definitely don’t want to start deleting and removing stories that I can continue to earn money from, right here on Medium.

However, I’m prepared to test the waters, using certain stories that only seem to appeal to non-Medium members.

As far as I can tell, there’s no real upside to allowing these stories to remain.

For instance:

Take my story titled: 10 Yummy Smoothie Recipes I Make At Home With My Blender.

When I first published the story, it was chosen for distribution, yet that didn’t seem to help the results.

With only 4% of internal traffic; notice where all the external traffic to this particular story comes from:

Since this is the type of story that I could easily modify and submit to Marker as an original, evergreen story, I may just remove this story soon.

Final Thoughts

Just like so many of the writing tips and advice I often provide in my stories for other writers, I recommend each writer do what is best for them.

This applies to whether you stay exclusive to Medium, whether you diversify your writing, whether you remove stories, or you simply start creating new ones for the Marker website.

Do what’s best for you, but do it only after you read the fine print (slowly and carefully), and after you make an honest assessment of where you are, and where you want to be with your writing.
