Could Social Media Be Detrimental to Our Health?

Insidious intentions

The problem with social media

We all are caught up in the world of social media. It's how we connect with people in our lives. It's where we display our pictures, our hobbies, and interests. Some of us use it as a way to air out our problems.

It seems innocent enough right?

Wrong!

Statistics indicate that there is a direct correlation between the use of social media and mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

So how is one indicative of the other?

My Take

Based purely on my own personal experiences I would have to speculate that a lot of it comes down to self-esteem.

Every day we are subjected to people living “their best life” We compare ourselves to others who seem far happier and more successful than we are.

We don’t consider that many people in actuality are putting on a facade. We don’t consider that perhaps they are feeling just as inadequate as we are.

It is hard to see that through the smiles and the positive energy that people exhume.

There are some days I can’t mentally cope with all the artificial happiness where everyone is all sunshine and dandelions. they live in this magical world where unicorns poop rainbows. In the meantime, my life is in shambles and I am a complete mess.

It can be demoralizing at times.

To base one’s own self-worth determined off the number of likes you get or views isn’t authentic and gives false perceptions of who we are as people.

We are not our profiles. We are unique individuals.

Revelations on the evils of social media

Suicide is on the uprise, especially amongst teens.

Does social networking play a factor?.

Many of us have encountered bullies at some point in our lives, the difference is that social media makes it far easier to bully others and the damage is far more significant.

The means to bully people are now conveniently located at their fingertips

Larger amounts are not only witnessed but have the capacity to join in on the bullying.

I have read numerous tragic tales of people taking their own lives as a result of something damaging being posted on the internet. It proved to have catastrophic consequences thus leading people to believe suicide was their only option.

In conclusion

Social media could be doing more harm than good. It has become a way of life for many, so it is not going away anytime soon. It is important however to recognize the dangers that could lurk behind these seemingly innocent internet applications and monitor the way they could affect your physical and mental health.
