Could Heterosexual Marriage Be Banned Along With Same-Sex Marriage in the Coming Months?
You can’t tell with this SCOTUS
In the years after Roe v Wade was decided, American women felt a sense of security surrounding their healthcare and reproductive rights. That is until June 24, 2022, when the Conservative Supreme Court overturned the landmark legislation that made abortion accessible in all 50 states.
Three Conservative justices appointed by Trump joined with two of the most radical Conservative Justices, Thomas and Alito, to roll back 50 years of a woman’s right to abortion. In their confirmation hearings, the three Trump appointees, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch, and Barrett, expressed their views that Roe v Wade was a settled precedent. They lied to Congress and the American people.
In voting to overturn Roe v Wade, they kept their promise to Trump and right-wing religious fanatics. The court ruling left the decision of abortion to the individual states to decide.
Shortly after the decision, radical right-wing Justice Clarence Thomas stated that “SCOTUS‘should reconsider‘ ’contraception, same-sex marriage rulings”. His statement can be found in this Politico article from June 24, 2022.
The other Radical right-wing Justice, Samuel Alito, makes no secret of his hatred of the LGBTQ+ community and his desire to overturn the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in this country.
Since the overturn of Roe v Wade, Conservative Republicans and religious right fanatics have been stepping up their efforts to abolish contraception and In Vitro Fertilization against the overwhelming opposition of American women and the American people in general.
Conservative, old, white males want to have complete domination over women’s bodies. Given what this Supreme Court has done and what it hopes to do, we can be sure that, if Trump is re-elected, same-sex marriage will be the next victim. Some argue that same-sex marriages do not bear children. Thus, there is no purpose or validity in those types of marriages.
Now, if some couples are not able to have children and are not able to access IVF treatments, why wouldn’t Conservatives consider these marriages to be purposeless or invalid?
Many religious conservatives are against the adoption of children not of the same race as the adoptive parents, so starting a family through adoption would not be a choice for many couples.
Considering the radicalization of the Supreme Court and the Republican Party, it is not beyond the imagination that after same-sex marriage is banned, childless heterosexual marriages will be prohibited, as well.
Vote wisely this November.
