Cosmos

A space adventure

What of the tales Constructed in pop culture and cinema Of flying ships roaming the vastness of the unknown Infinity and beyond is a popular quote Explorers they called themselves Searching for life or habitation In a world with no bounds With an ever present theme of a dying earth Inhabitable, their tales record

We know today That the earth is endangered For the sake of fiction and prose Lets consider these tales to be true Of man leaving the dirt it grew And embarking on an interstellar journey Of a new world with new life

Would we perpetually roam The openness of the cosmos Or look for a land fertile and loam If we are lucky to find such a place Would we depart our evolution And go back to farming the soil Surely Industry will take time to grow And we’ve already witnessed The dangers of the factory Would we persist on growth and destruction Or would we have learned from our fatal errors

I know some may argue If that time ever came There would be a more sustainable means of mass production And as such lands may be spared of pollution But as is the nature of growth and expansion We will discover new ways to hurt and destroy Or maybe we’ll mirror Huxley’s world Trade off our humanity for safety and serenity Well, these are not questions for me to answer I’ll leave that to the world controllers Of tomorrow and eternity

Thank you for reading.

The reference to Huxley’s Brave New World at the end is something I’ve always found to be very interesting. The idea of trading our humanity for safety and serenity begs the question, would our new harm free world of peace be a utopia or a dystopia.

Thank you to James G Brennan for a very interesting prompt, got me thinking.
