Summary

The article describes a shopping experience at Walmart during the coronavirus pandemic, where the mandatory use of masks and social distancing measures lead to an unexpectedly intimate and erotic encounter between the narrator and a checkout clerk.

Abstract

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, a routine shopping trip to Walmart turns into an intimate and somewhat erotic experience for the narrator. Despite both the shopper and the checkout clerk wearing mandatory masks, the narrator becomes captivated by the clerk's youthful blue eyes, which stand in stark contrast to the concealed signs of aging on the narrator's own face. The enforced distance from other shoppers and the shared use of hand sanitizer contribute to a sense of closeness and intimacy during the transaction. As they interact while packing groceries, the narrator fantasizes about the clerk's age and speculates about the personal use of items like flushable wipes and Beano, all while maintaining the pretense that these are for someone else. The encounter leaves the narrator feeling a strong emotional connection, to the point of declaring a burgeoning sense of love.

Coronavirus Makes Shopping At Walmart An Erotic Experience

She may have been hiding 83 years behind that mask but her eyes were 20 something

All I saw when I was checking out at Walmart today was a pair of blue eyes. The checker was sporting the mandatory mask that was required everyone wear in the store — so was I. And there was no one within 6 feet of us. Mutual use of hand sanitizer. All so intimate.

She may have been hiding 83 years behind that mask but her blue eyes were 20 something. I should know, my mask covered 68 years of intemperate living. I had lines between my nose and my mouth I wondered if nature intended to be there. A nasty white spot when the dermatologist dug out a precancerous bump a year ago. But here we were. No one within 6 feet of us, together packing: zucaanni, summer squash, bananas, pork, milk, toothpaste — each of us pretending the flushable wipes were for my grandchildren and the Beano was for a friend.

I think I’m in love.
