Summary

The provided content offers an update on the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic in the Netherlands during early April 2020, detailing government measures, societal responses, and the status of various sectors including healthcare, economy, and culture.

Abstract

As of April 2020, the Netherlands continues to grapple with the Coronavirus pandemic, with enforcement of social distancing rules leading to fines for non-compliance in public venues. The Dutch military has recalled personnel from Iraq due to mission delays caused by the pandemic. German health authorities have designated the Netherlands as a risk area, affecting healthcare workers' mobility. The Dutch healthcare system faces strain, with intensive care units reaching capacity and support services extending assistance to families of patients. The economic fallout is evident, with freelancers experiencing significant income loss and the music industry advocating for increased airplay of Dutch artists. Educational adaptations include a primary school in Almere implementing a system for students to safely collect and return schoolwork. The article also discusses the global race for a vaccine, with Dutch pharmaceuticals contributing to the effort, and reflects on the emotional toll of the pandemic on citizens and healthcare professionals.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that the pandemic's impact extends beyond health, affecting the economy, culture, and daily life.
  • There is a sense of urgency regarding the need for Dutch healthcare professionals, as indicated by the German healthcare institute's classification of the Netherlands as a risk area.

Coronavirus In The Netherlands — Update 4, 5 and 6 April 2020

The Coronavirus is — as you may know, still here in The Netherlands, but also situations in the country are happening. Think about the economy, people going abroad, the culture sector falling apart etc…

Fines for visitors and owners of café and gambling house. The police arrested people who were in a café and illegal gamble house in The Hague. They were still open, even the Coronarules told differently. There were around 30 visitors in the café. They got fined for not distancing with 1,5 meter.

Dutch Military people are getting back from Iraque as their mission is delayed. They came back in a C-130 Hercules from the airforce, says defence. About 35 militaries came from Iraque.

The Robert Koch Institute — the German health care institute called The Netherlands a risk area and that is why health cares, who was in The Netherlands, may not work in German health care institutions for two weeks.

A director of Leer, in northwestern Germany, says that the Dutch doctors and nurses working in a clinic may not go to the Netherlands: “We urgently need Dutch doctors in this era of corona crisis,” he told the Dagblad van het Noorden. It is unknown how many Dutch people work in Leer.

Last weekend was very beautiful weather, but the nature parking lots, woods and beaches were closed to not be that busy there. Boroughs, the Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten call everybody not to go into nature, also the next week with beautiful weather. These organisations want people not to go into nature as you can’t give the 1,5-meter distance to one another.

Having a vaccine against the Coronavirus. Universities and Pharmaceuticals all over the world are in line to make this vaccine. All these universities and Pharmaceuticals are working hard for this. Also Dutch pharmaceutical is in the race to make this vaccine. This company comes from Leiden. Only the road to success is very long.

Freelancers are worrying. 64 per cent of the freelancer’s incomes dropped drastically since all the events are cancelled. Half of them told I&O Research that they are not satisfied with the Dutch compensations. People also concerns about their own financial issues.

Eric Snijder from The LUMC, Leiden, told in a Dutch TV programme that we could have a vaccine against Coronavirus if we learn from SARS. Snijders is one of the people working on the vaccine: “We dropped the ball after the first SARS outbreak, seventeen years ago. The virus inhibitors against corona could have been there now. You could have optimized those molecules in a long process. The best example of this is HIV inhibitors. coronaviruses are even simpler because you don’t have to use them all your life, but maybe just a month. “

Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care, thinks it is too soon to be optimistic for fewer patients on the intensive care — even for the relatively small amount of people in the IC. He says that about fourteen days we have more than 2000 Coronapatiens at the intensive care. That is too much. He also says that it is very difficult for IC-nurses and IC-doctors to keep it all up, but we have to manage and only with help from the Dutch citizens to keep up the rules.

Victim support from The Netherlands will support the family of Intensive Care patients. On the long term, family members could be traumatic when they are not allowed to be with their family. That could be when they die to hold their hands, but also not seeing your beloved one at all.

The Dutch music industry wants radio broadcasters to broadcast only music from a Dutch artist. They need to be supported as there is no income for them anymore. It doesn’t have to be in Dutch, but the artist must be from The Netherlands.

North Rhine-Westphalia, a German federal state, want that the German government keep the border open with The Netherlands. The state thinks there will be even more economic problems when the trucks with imported foodstuffs from the Netherlands and from the port of Rotterdam get stuck in long traffic jams at the border. On the border are police officers asking people why they want to be at the other side of the border. Germany is also sharpening the rules for not tanking at the other side of the border with The Netherlands.

When you have been abroad in The Netherlands, you have to be in quarantine for fourteen days. Except for people who are in trucks driving to The Netherlands for their job. Getting new gas is not allowed.

A primary school in Almere has made a desk where they can pick up and return their schoolwork. Every Monday they or their parents will do that. It is also a moment to see what they are doing and how they are doing. The students will pick new schoolwork and return the work they made the previous week to look at what they can do better. To protect everybody for spreading the Coronavirus by coming to altogether at once, the school said they must come in small groups.

RIVM says there are fewer deaths in The Netherlands. Now there are 101 more deaths than yesterday. We have a total of 1867 deaths at the moment.

Always check the (latest) facts with your country.

The numbers are from yesterday or earlier this day. I haven’t seen new numbers so far, when there will be new numbers, rules and interesting situations here in The Netherlands, I will inform you.
